Description

Position Title: Residence Director Department: Residence Life

Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life

*Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00am 5:00pm *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday Friday; Required live-in position; some nights and weekends as needed.

* College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM Monday through Friday. However due to the nature of responsibility to the student body individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per (any hours more than 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved in advance by the department supervisor. Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description. Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document.

Summary of this position:

This 12-month fully benefited position serves part-time as a Residence Director and part-time in one of five collateral areas listed below. As a Residence Director this position is responsible for the management of one or more residence halls. In addition to the Residence Director Responsibilities each Residence Director will be responsible for one of the following collaterals:

  • Student Outreach and Care
  • Communications Coordinator
  • Student Programming Board Advisor
  • Coordinator for Intramurals and Wellness
  • Coordinator for Student Employment

This position is an essential employee and a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Clery Act.

Minimum Qualifications Required: (please be specific and respond to every question; indicate none if not applicable)

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Masters degree preferred with specialization in Higher Education College Student Personnel or relevant field.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Experience in residence life/housing required.
  • Experience with student activities student success and/or leadership development.
  • Experience in one or more of the collateral areas is preferred.

Special skills knowledge and abilities:

  • Strong communication and organizational skills are required as well as skills in leadership development supervision crisis intervention and group dynamics.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and experience with staff development and training preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population including various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

License certification or registration necessary:

  • Valid drivers license

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds.
  • Responds to emergency situations and other needed events after hours and on weekends.
  • May be required to lift and/or carry up to 25lbs.

Environmental conditions:

  • Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors students staff and faculty.
  • Required to live in a on campus residence hall apartment. Includes all utilities cable and internet.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer phone etc.
  • May include a requirement to operate vehicles college vans/cars/carts if the incumbent will be expected to travel or utilize the vehicles on a regular basis

Residence Director Duties

Summary: The Residence Director manages up to two residence halls housing approximately 220-275 students. Position requires employee to live on-campus. Included with the position is a semi-furnished apartment (year-long) board plan (August-May) and a parking space. Pets are allowed with a signed pet agreement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Residence Life and Associate Director of Residence Life to ensure inclusive recruitment and hiring practices to develop a diverse student leadership team with the selection training and evaluation of Residence Assistants (RAs)
  • Provide assigned RAs with hall-specific orientations staff development training programs
  • Ensure updated and timely communications with RAs
  • Monitor the use and condition of facilities in the residence hall including common areas and student rooms; supervise room inspections and regularly walk the building to assess fire safety and maintenance protocol
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records relative to the residency of each student; maintain student emergency information; coordinate room changes and consolidation.
  • Interpret institutional policies and procedures and both serve as a liaison and advocate for students staff and judicial board; assess and implement best practices when navigating violations of college policies.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for low level conduct violations.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation as Staff Member on Duty and respond quickly and with the ability to make responsible decisions in emergency situations and communicate with student staff pro-staff and emergency service workers.
  • Coordinate programming in assigned residence hall(s)
  • Work collaboratively within Residence Life to complete annual departmental assessment needs.
  • Attend professional staff meetings and serve on a Student Affairs Committee
  • Serve and coordinate within the conduct process as necessary
  • Policy Review: Collaborate with the residence life professional staff and Residence assistants to ensure policies and procedures promote diversity equity and inclusion within the Residential community. This includes ensuring fair and equitable and accessible housing and addressing bias/Title IX concerns

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise up to 12 Residence Assistants.

Collateral Responsibilities (Typically 40% of the responsibilities):

This position will be responsible for one of the following collateral responsibilities:

  • Student Outreach & Care
    • Responsible for coordinating our MC Cares team to provide proactive collaborative holistic support to our students as well as maintaining our Scots Supplies Center coordinating the Swipes for Scots meal campaign and creating and maintaining relationships with partners both on and off campus.
  • Communications Coordinator
    • Responsible for leading effective communications and social media campaigns to support the Division of Student Affairs and manage the Residence Life Inbox providing timely service to our students and partners. Assist with the development and deployment of student-facing technology systems.
  • Student Programming Board Advisor
    • The Student Programming Board (SPB) is the primary student programming body at Maryville College. The SPB advisor will create programs and opportunities to collaborate with various student organizations to facilitate a vibrant campus community.
  • Coordinator for Intramurals and Wellness
    • Responsible for leading and organizing student Intramural Sports on campus planning and facilitating student recreation opportunities and serving on the Wellness Council to plan and implement engaging student programming.
  • Coordinator of Student Employment
    • Responsible for implementing and coordinating standard operating procedures involving student employment hiring practices and developing supervisory training for hiring managers.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive respectful learning environment for all staff faculty and students.
