Director of Transportation
JOB GOAL:
To oversee and manage the daily operations of the school districts transportation system ensuring safe efficient and reliable transportation for all students. This includes supervising routes bus drivers and bus monitors; coordinating with schools administrators on student discipline matters related to transportation; maintaining a high-functioning vehicle fleet through collaboration with the maintenance team; and ensuring safety and compliance measures related to managing underground storage tanks (UST).
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING:
- High School Diploma required; college degree preferred
- Valid and appropriate Tennessee Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Three (3) years of supervisory or administrative experience preferred.
- Experience managing staff and coordinating logistics is required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven record of safe driving meeting district and insurance requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in pupil transportation or related field
- Must pass Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical and TB Test
- Effective communication and organizational skills
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises all transportation staff including bus drivers monitors and shop personnel.
- Plans coordinates and occasionally drives daily bus routes and schedules to ensure efficiency and timeliness.
- Monitors and supports the enforcement of student discipline on buses in collaboration with school administrators.
- Provides leadership and training for transportation personnel.
- Ensures compliance with all federal state and local transportation laws and safety regulations.
- Oversees maintenance and repair operations for all vehicles in collaboration with the shop foreman.
- Oversees maintenance and repair operation of all underground storage tanks in collaboration with the Director of Facilities/other authorized leadership and staff.
- Responds to and resolves transportation-related incidents concerns and emergencies from all parents staff and employees.
- Maintains accurate records for routing maintenance personnel and student behavior incidents.
- Conducts periodic evaluations of drivers and monitors to ensure quality and performance standards are met.
- Collaborates with school leadership to support special transportation needs (e.g. field trips extracurriculars bus-related IEP services).
- Assists in checking road conditions during inclement weather to inform school opening decisions.
- Leads efforts in maintaining a lean cost-effective transportation operation.
- Promotes positive working relationships and a team-oriented environment within the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned by district leadership.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of personnel.
