The Kennewick School District is seeking a highly qualified and visionary leader to serve as the Coordinator of Keewaydin Discovery Center/Special Services. This position is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight in the coordination supervision and implementation of high-quality special education services for children from birth through age five. The Coordinator will play a key role in ensuring early learning programs meet the diverse needs of students and comply with all state and federal regulations while fostering inclusive and supportive environments for young learners.

In addition to overseeing birth-to-five services the Coordinator will also serve as a key member of the districts special education leadership team supporting students and programming across all grade levels.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Masters degree in special education educational administration or a related field.
  2. Washington State Teacher or ESA Certification and Administrator Certification.
  3. Relevant experience in special education.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to serving students with special needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Leadership & Administrative Experience
    • Proven success in supervising staff and educational programs including special education.
    • Experience creating positive school climates and developing effective programs.
  2. Regulatory & Program Knowledge
    • Strong understanding of federal state and local education laws and regulations (e.g. IDEA NCLB).
    • Knowledge of district operations including contract management and policy compliance.
  3. Strategic Planning & Vision
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement educational and organizational plans.
    • A clear vision and plan for special education preschool services.
  4. Communication & Interpersonal Skills
    • Excellent oral written and listening communication.
    • Skilled in public speaking and engaging diverse community stakeholders.
  5. Collaboration & Facilitation
    • Skilled collaborator and facilitator in team-based decision-making and problem-solving.
  6. Conflict Resolution & Intervention
    • Knowledge and application of effective conflict resolution and student intervention strategies.
  7. Operational & Technological Proficiency
    • Strong skills in fiscal management and personnel oversight.
    • Proficiency in technology and digital tools for education.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Early Childhood Special Education Programs: Oversee planning and implementation of services for children birthage five; provide direct on-site leadership at Keewaydin Discovery Center.
  2. Program Design & Compliance: Ensure services align with state/federal regulations district policies and budget constraints.
  3. Collaborative Planning: Partner with the Director and Assistant Directors of Special Services to plan monitor and evaluate programs; foster a collaborative team culture.
  4. Data-Driven Improvement: Use data and evidence-based practices to assess and enhance program effectiveness.
  5. Fiscal Oversight: Manage budgets and accounting processes to ensure accurate use of state and federal funds.
  6. Staff Supervision & Support: Recruit supervise evaluate and mentor staff including itinerant and teaching personnel.
  7. Inclusive Education Coordination: Support the inclusion of preschoolers with disabilities into community-based settings.
  8. IEP & Program Development: Lead and support the development and implementation of high-quality compliant Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that reflect student needs educational goals and service delivery requirements.
  9. IEP Team Participation: Actively engage in IEP meetings to support student-specific planning and decision-making.
  10. Stakeholder Communication: Develop and implement strategies for communication with families staff and the community.
  11. Curriculum & Instructional Support: Partner with staff to develop and implement curriculum using inclusive evidence-based instructional practices.
  12. Inter-District Collaboration: Maintain positive relationships with special education leaders in neighboring districts.
  13. Professional Development: Lead training initiatives that enhance staff skills and program quality.
  14. Classroom Support: Conduct classroom visits to provide feedback coaching and share best practices.
  15. Problem Solving & Innovation: Approach challenges with creativity independence and teamwork.
  16. Other Duties as Assigned: Fulfill additional responsibilities as determined by district leadership.

Salary Range: 210 Days$144598-$155658 (2025-26 Salary Schedule)

Lifting:The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 26 lbs; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

Physical Hazards:While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F . The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.

Application Procedure: In-District staffmust complete an internal online application by10:00 p.m. (PST) on or before the closing date.In-building/In-district staff will have eight school days or eight working days during the summer to apply for a vacant position through the online application system. The employee may choose but will not be required to meet with the building administrator to understand the building practices procedures and initiatives specific to the position to which they are applying. After eight days if an in-building employee is qualified for the position the principal will offer the employee the position. In the case that more than one in-building employee is interested in a position the position will be offered to the qualified and senior employee. If a position is not filled in-building after the eight day period the position will be offered to the qualified most senior in-district applicant if any. Teachers with a summative evaluation score of 1 or 2 are not eligible to transfer unless agreed upon by the District and Association.
