The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Aquatics Program Coordinator vacancy within OPRYD.

This position will be responsible for developing directing and implementing the aquatics program for the City of Oakland including but not limited to public swimming learn-to-swim programs swim teams lifeguard training programs and many more. The Aquatics Program Coordinator oversees aquatic sports activities for all ages and works with other departmental and city-sponsored programs as well as potential sponsors in the administration of aquatics sports programs.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Providing leadership and direction to the staff in the Aquatics Unit.

  • Planning and delivering aquatic programs for youth adults and local schools.

  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices for employees.

  • Providing training and certification opportunities to staff and the general public.

  • Monitoring the internal and external factors affecting the aquatic industry.

  • Communicating both orally and in writing to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Designing and developing promotional materials including brochures fliers and training manuals.

  • Seeking and managing current and new grant opportunities.

Minimum Requirements for Application

This recruitment will produce two eligible lists. The restricted list will be for full-time permanent part-time or part-time City and Port of Oakland employees who maintain employment for the duration of the recruitment and pass all stages of the recruitment process. The open list will be for all other applicants who pass all stages of the recruitment process.

This is a public contact position. The City highly encourages all bilingual candidates to apply! Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish Cantonese or Mandarin. Under the authority of Civil Service Rules Section 5.03 if a position requires bilingual language skills only those candidates who have indicated they are bilingual in the required language(s) will be referred. Bilingual candidates will be required to successfully pass a language proficiency test if selected for hire.

Education:
A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in recreation leisure services physical education or a related field.

Experience:
Three (3) years of professional experience providing aquatic related programs and activities such as swimming lessons lifeguard training and water safety programmingincluding one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

License or Certificate / Other Requirements:
Successful incumbents in this job are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of the assigned to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked public transportation maynot be a costeffective or efficient method for traveling to the various locations who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Drivers License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

Must possess the following certifications from the American Red Cross (or equivalent):
  • First Aid
  • Lifeguarding with CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuer
OR
Lifeguarding andCardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR for Professional Rescuer with AED) or (CPR for Lifeguards with AED)
  • Lifeguard Instructor
  • Water Safety Instructor

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or a Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) is desirable.


Supplemental Information

The Recruitment Process:

The City of Oakland works with a Civil Service system. Applicants apply online and HR staff reviews their experience education and training listed on the application against the minimum qualifications listed for each position.

Candidates who demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements are then invited to participate in an assessment process (or testing) to measure their knowledge skills and abilities in job-related areas.

Candidates who do not demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements will have an opportunity to request a final review. Candidates must request a final review within 5 business days of being notified that they did not meet the minimum qualifications.

In the final review candidates may clarify information already provided on their application. No additional work history education or certifications will be accepted. Any decisions made during this review process will be final.

For this recruitment all qualified applicants will be invited to the structured interview sometimes referred to as an Oral Exam (weighted 100%). The tentative date of the structured interview is late July.

Candidates who pass each stage in the process will be placed on an eligible list. Some candidates may receive extra points for example if you are a Veteran with an honorable discharge or if you are a current City of Oakland resident. If youre applying to a restricted posting and you are eligible as a current City employee you may also receive additional points for your City service. Extra points are only applied to passing scores so if you do not pass every element of the testing process you cannot use extra points to pass.

Disaster Service Workers
