Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor the Lead Chef is responsible for creating menus and preparing meals for clients of the Shelter. The Lead Chef will ensure meals are ready to be served in compliance with all health regulations with the support of kitchen staff and volunteers. They will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received recorded sorted and stored in the most efficient manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and support staff and volunteers in the process of preparation service and cleaning of meal services
Plan and prepare healthy and nutritious meal plans and rotating menu
Create menus that fit the budget and utilize donations
Prepare healthy and nutritious meals
Ensure weekend meals are planned and prepared for weekend staff
Order all food items and supplies in collaboration with Food Services Supervisor
Code invoices for Accounting Department
Ensure Cooler temps are recorded and acceptable; notifying facilities staff if issues arise
Ensure chemical and dishwashing daily records are kept and within acceptable ranges
Assist in supporting the School Lunch Program when required
Help and support with special event meals and holiday meals
Receive verify orders and properly store all purchased food and kitchen items
Work collaboratively with support staff to keep stored food rotations current
Maintain Occupational Health & Safety standards and records
Know and follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared handled and stored
Keep all food inventories up to date
Track statistics including but not limited to temperature audits serving stats meals served
Ensure cleanliness is maintained in kitchen
Fill in for Food Services Supervisor in their absence which includes but is not limited to managing schedules approving timesheets and other time sensitive administrative duties
Attend meetings and training as required
Pickup food if required
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
A minimum of 2 years experience working in the Food Service industry is preferred
Valid Food Handlers Certification
Experience with menu planning large quantity cooking and working with donated goods is a strong asset
Ability to lead a team consisting of staff and volunteers
Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise
Working knowledge of OHS and other food guidelines
Valid First-Aid Training
Drivers license and clean drivers abstract
WORKING CONDITIONS
Weekdays full-time hours weekends may be required
Position is often fast paced. Potentially high-pressure environment where the ability to adapt to change and find creative solutions is essential.
Varied and substantial mental and emotional effort required to analyze information and problem solve. Must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations provide conflict resolution and work directly with clients at risk
Moderate to significant physical effort required: must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds extensive periods of standing walking carrying items and reaching
Daily interactions with colleagues and guests required
Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
o Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.

Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
This position requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid drivers license and will need to consent to a drivers abstract request.
