Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) oversees and implements the organizations fundraising strategy manages the development team and drives advocacy and awareness to expand mission impact and organizational growth. The Chief Development Officer is responsible for carrying out the mission policies and strategic goals of the Oakwood Foundation Board as well as the President & Chief Executive Officer as it relates to marketing and fundraising for the organization. This position provides leadership and oversight in cultivating donor relationships and gifts for the Oakwood Foundation. The Chief Development Officer will grow the foundation portfolio and expand its major donor program.

Effective communication in this role is essential with a specific emphasis on representing Oakwood and the Oakwood Foundation with honesty and integrity and honoring donor intent in the use of Oakwood Foundation Funds.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to)

Strategic Leadership

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan and goals for donor development and philanthropy including defining structure budget processes and metrics.
  • Sets and achieves mission-driven fundraising and capital campaign goals.
  • Leads the organizations philanthropic and fundraising efforts building donor and stakeholder relationships to advance the mission and secure funding and donations.
  • Responsible for planning organizing and executing ongoing and special fundraising campaigns to meet the strategic capital and program goals of Oakwood Village operations as approved by the OLSM Board and the President & CEO
  • Assists the President & CEO and the Foundation Board Chairperson to create agendas for Foundation Board meetings. Responsible for reporting at Foundation Board meetings as required by the agenda.
  • Maintains the highest ethical standards in fundraising and adheres to all state and federal statutes. Responsible for developing and carrying out all Foundation policies.
  • Provides detailed fundraising progress reports to the President & CEO the Foundation Board and the OLSM Board.
  • Accountable for overall staff development and administration of the Foundation with an emphasis on stewardship of Foundation assets. The Foundation Director is expected to meet performance measures established by the President & CEO and the OLSM Board.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer and Finance Team to create fund-development budgets in line with established performance measures strategic objectives and departmental goals. Budgets are reviewed and approved by the President & CEO prior to presentation to the Foundation Board.
  • Responsible for the financial operating results of the Foundation as compared to the budget and established financial measures.
  • Ensures strong systems and processes are in place to enable quality donor management and best in class fundraising practices.
  • Manages and leads the Foundation team.

DONOR RELATIONS

            • Builds and manages a portfolio of donors and funders. Serves as the front-line fundraiser of high-level supporters by creating managing and securing gifts and donations from individuals corporations and community partners.
            • Accountable for creating and overseeing capital campaigns driven by the organizational strategic and growth plans.
            • Initiates and maintains ongoing relationships with potential major donors including residents volunteers persons on waitlist family members board members other community leaders local foundations and national foundations that focus on aging and aging services and local state and federal governmental bodies and agencies that create grants for aging service programs and facilities.
            • Leads the entire resource development cycle including individual engagements foundation grants special events corporate support gift acknowledgment major gifts planned giving and special fundraising initiatives such as capital/programmatic/endowment campaigns.
            • Maintains continual growth in endowment funds through a balanced program of annual giving and planned giving with special emphasis on charitable gift annuities and bequests.
            • Builds relationships with the Lutheran congregations in Dane County and seeks partnership opportunities.

            ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

            • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful comprehensive fund development program including the completion of capital campaigns
            • Exceptional written and oral skills particularly for proposals reports and related materials.
            • Preference for hands-on fundraising experience in senior living and/or healthcare.
            • Demonstrated success in conducting initial outreach to prospective donors/partners resulting in engagement and increased donations
            • Exercises independent judgment and make sound decision.
            • Commitment to Oakwoods mission.
            • Creative and innovative in establishing short/long term goals and objectives policies and procedures.

            EXPERIENCE EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING

            • Bachelors degree in a related field. Graduate degree preferred.
            • Minimum of 7-10 years of demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful comprehensive fund development program preferably in senior living or healthcare.
            • Experience in managing capital campaigns and/or major fundraising initiatives.
            • Proven success with generating increased funds from individual donors both major donors and annual appeals through a coordinated strategic approa
            • Experience working directly with nonprofit board.
            • Experience with sales or donor database management.
