Position Summary

The First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO) seeks to hire an Attorney at Law to join our Legal Services team. Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families the Attorney at Law will provide guidance and advice to First Nations families while working with a senior lawyer and support staff. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic wraparound support aimed at enhancing access to justice for First Nations families in contact with the Child and Family Services system by working substantially in the areas of child protection private guardianship human rights complaints and matters before the Office of the Vulnerable Persons Commission.
  • Assist FNFAOAMC in innovative legal research aimed at supporting broader law reform efforts encouraging selfgovernment and selfdetermination of First Nations and promoting reconciliation.
  • Developing public legal education resources regarding child protection processes and rights.
  • Representing clients in child protection proceedings.
  • Representing FNFAO as an intervener in matters before the court.
  • Preparing legal documents in support of litigation.
  • Preparing grant applications in areas relevant to justice and child protection.
  • Preparing research memorandums and legal opinions on a wide range of topics.
  • Developing legal forms for use by FNFAO staff.
  • Providing legal information to FNFAO staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • 2024 calls welcomed to apply; child protection experience is an asset.
  • A law degree from an accredited Canadian Law School or equivalent.
  • A member in good standing of the Law Society of Manitoba.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods techniques and information to develop analytical frameworks.
  • Knowledge of First Nations research methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture history treaty and inherent rights.
  • Experience working with First Nations and First Nations organizations or entities.
  • Excellent verbal written interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide analytical support while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to follow office practices procedures and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of First Nation people and Nations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be able to travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Drivers License and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Checks.
