Job Description

About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100 year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Franciscos homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure longterm success.

Salary: $125000 $135000

Reports to: Chief Programs Officer

Location: 37 Grove Street San Francisco. Fully onsite (not hybrid or remote).

The Opportunity:
Are you a dedicated supportive systemsminded leader passionate about helping families move from homelessness to stability Compass Family Services is seeking a Senior Director of Shelter Programs to guide four program teams and support 40 staff working across shelter transitional housing and housing resource navigation programs. Youll supervise Program Directors coordinate strategy across teams and work closely with our funders at the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing to shape programs and policy for homeless families in San Francisco.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that our shelter transitional housing and access point programs provide highly effective traumainformed services that enable families to move from homelessness to stability.
  • Identify opportunities for programs to streamline and align services.
  • Provide direct supervision and ongoing ontheground support to the Program Directors of Compass Family Shelter Compass Clara House Compass Urgent Accomodation Vouchers and Central City Access Point. Support in the delivery of program services staff supervision and professional development.
  • Represent Compass shelter programs externally in the community. Partner with Compass Public Policy External Affairs team to identify opportunities for advocacy.
  • Build strong relationships with funders. Ensure that contractual obligations are met or exceeded that funds are spent effectively and that outcomes are conveyed successfully. Work with the Development team to identify and apply for additional funding to expand and improve our work.
  • Work with the Impact Learning team to use data to inform our housing efforts diving deeply into whats working whats not and how staff across the agency can better target our efforts to improve family outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Compass Behavioral Health Services to ensure that services are delivered from a traumainformed perspective and that all staff receive robust clinical training and support.
  • Work with the Director of Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging to ensure that services are imbued with an inclusive equitable and antiracist perspective.
  • Connect with and support Compass families. Step in when appropriate to provide crisis intervention and provide support in challenging situations.

The Candidate:
We seek an experienced leader capable of overseeing program components ensuring optimal service provision and driving impactful outcomes. Ideal candidates will possess a track record in managerial roles within social work or related fields demonstrating exceptional leadership communication and problemsolving skills.

Specific qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in staff supervision including direct and indirect reports. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead coach and mentor.
  • At least 5 years of experience developing and managing complex nonprofit programs.
  • Deep understanding and experience with direct service programs for homeless or atrisk families. Experience with residential and/or other homeless housing programs preferred.
  • Experience overseeing contracts managing budgets and maintaining relationships with funders.
  • Strong communication advocacy organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supporting individuals in crisis and with traumainformed care.
  • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing integrating and promoting diversity equity inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization.
  • Degree in social work nonprofit administration/management or related field encouraged but not required or a combination of equivalent educational and lived experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required; Salesforce experience a plus.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $per year.
  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in your first year 5 in your second. Also paid holidays sick time family leave and time off for education.
  • Insurance: health dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement: after one year of work Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 26.
