****Applicants seeking shortterm or parttime work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire appointments which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructionaltype positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for fulltime employees and up to 1 calendar year for parttime employees.

Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Hoapili Hale Pai team and Principal Investigators the NHSS Hoapili Hale Pai Publication & Research Manager will provide the following:

  1. Lead the distribution plan for circulating the NHSS Hale Pai student publication project deliverables into Hawaiian schools including Hawaiian public charter immersion and preschools across Hawaii.
  2. Visit and engage with Hawaiian schools and teachers across different secondary educational institutions to share about the NHSS Hale Pai student publication the Hoapili project and NHSS programming.
  3. Lead the layout design and dissemination of bilingual (Hawaiian and English) supplemental curriculum to accompany the NHSS Hale Pai student publications including multimedia videos and other handouts for use in the classroom.
  4. Assist with putting Hawaiian archival research photos maps and newspaper visuals into a mixedmedia format for use in digital storytelling formats for NHSS Hawaiian student publication project
  5. Compile archival research materials that support the NHSS Hawaiian student publication project.
  6. Work with NHSS publisher to finalize layout and formatting for the NHSS Hawaiian student publication projects.
  7. Work with NHSS student authors and illustrators to meet grant deliverables and deadlines for upcoming NHSS Hale Pai student publications (4 per year).
  8. Produce other graphic media materials to support the NHSS publication efforts as well as presentations both on and off campus once publication is completed and distributed.
  9. Attend meetings with NHSS faculty staff student authors and partners as required to meet these goals and objectives.
  10. Other related tasks and/or duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors degree in Hawaiian Language Hawaiian Studies Education Ethnic Studies or related field.
  2. Experience with publication and curriculum development.
  3. Ability to work with teachers and schools to share curriculum.


Desired Qualifications:

  1. Published work focusing on Hawaiian history education themes & content
  2. Familiarity with Hawaiian language history and culture for publishing in this content area
  3. Familiarity with bilingual curriculum development (Hawaiian and English)
  4. Demonstrated ability to present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and artistic expressionFamiliarity with institutional barriers for Native Hawaiian students in higher education and best practices for Native Hawaiian student success
