Role:
This is a parttime (up to 16 hours per week) position as a Peer Support Specialist for adults with serious mental illness and cooccurring substance use disorders. Under the guidance of the lead clinician a peer support specialist shares their own recovery experience and provides supportive community services such as assisting and teaching a consumer to obtain housing employment medical care transportation recreation financial benefits and other available entitlements. assist consumers in accessing community resources support consumers in developing recovery plans and provide education on recovery from mental illness and substance use. Peer Support Specialists advocate for and enhance acceptance of individuals with mental illness in the workplace family and community. Services are primarily provided with consumers in their homes and in the community. Peer Support Specialists work occurs in office home and community settings. Peer Support Specialists work under the supervision of the Mental Health Program Director and Program Coordinator.

Job Specific Requirements:
Peer Support Specialist must have strong engagement skills and a nonjudgmental approach. Some evening hours may be required. A valid MI drivers license is required.
Qualifications and Experience:
Peer staff must have a high school diploma and experience as a primary consumer in recovery from substance use or cooccurring disorder. A valid MI drivers license is required.
Certified Peer Support II: must have completed Michigan Department of Health and Human Services peer training and obtained certification as a peer support specialist.
