Position purpose:
Formulates the Telfer School of Managements longterm business plan by framing clear strategic choices soliciting the perspectives of stakeholders driving to alignment and articulating a comprehensive corporate communications strategy.

Promotes and enhances the public profile of the Universitys Telfer School of Management by providing strategic direction and leadership for: internal and external communications & marketing; development of strategic initiatives and partnerships; and advisory support to senior executives.

Provides leadership expertise strategic and tactical advice to senior executives. Responsible for the development and implementation of innovative communications and marketing strategies and major events with the objective of raising the profile of uOttawas Telfer School of Management internally and externally on a local national and international scale.

Leads a team of professionals involved in multiple marketing and communications projects and activities. Leads the prioritization of work assignments and manages the efforts of team members. Recruits mentors trains develops manages and evaluates staff ensuring capable and engaged resources.

In this role you will:

  • Strategic Direction: Leads the development of strategic direction for the faculty activities and research by setting priorities processes defining audiences adopting various methods and establishing key performance indicators.
  • Partnership Management: With the objective to identify new partnerships and highimpact initiatives and enhance communications/marketing activities provides strategic communications planning and expertise to clients (i.e. professors researchers students internal partners) and key stakeholders (i.e. industry leaders). Is responsible for overall business development including identifying gaps in the faculty priorities and portfolios leading to the identification and negotiation of strategic partnerships.
  • Expert Advice: Develops strategic ideas and insights that reflect relevant market conditions and challenges and knits these together into a coherent strategy for the faculty. Manages and monitors the facultys strategic planning process and drives implementation and execution of the strategy for the faculty. Provides expert advice on best practices and resources that improve recruitment reach and engagement with internal and external audiences.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Creates and articulates longterm projectspecific communication plans targeted for internal dissemination and buyin. Directs the communications efforts of the Dean and ViceDeans the broader uOttawa by developing compelling key corporate messaging about the Facultys priorities to key target audiences influencing stakeholder engagement.
  • Market Analysis: Responsible to anticipate the future and mobilize the faculty to meet its challenges. Senses and monitors trends and events in higher education and related industries.
  • Planning: Leads the planning and management of faculty events such as partnership announcements research conferences & symposia VIP conferences etc. to enhance the visibility of the Telfer School of Management. Leads special projects including various analysis that support the facultys strategic aim and priorities.
  • External Liaison: Hires manages and oversees the work of external suppliers such as freelance writers translators photographers videographers and designers for the production of printed and audiovisual material among other communications tools.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelors degree in marketing communications or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ten (10) years of leadership and management experience in communications and marketing including significant progressive experience of providing strategic communications advice to senior executives.
  • Five (5) years of human financial resource and project management as well as demonstrated ability to resolve conflict successfully.
  • Extensive experience in the development and implementation of strategic communications and marketing plans including digital and print strategies media relations advertising and events management.
  • Extensive experience leading strategic initiatives in particular demonstrated ability to develop strategic metricsbased marketing and recruitment planning and execution.
  • Proven abilities in building partnerships and/or collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to socialize an organizations strategy with executives and key stakeholders in order to build consensus on key issues.
  • Excellent ability to coordinate a variety of tasks under pressure managing priorities meeting strict deadlines and following up on deliverables.
  • Demonstrated initiative autonomy and excellent leadership skills to foster commitment and cooperation within the communications team.
  • Sound judgment initiative tact and diplomacy as well as a high level of discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to quickly assimilate complex information and to translate this information into plain language for a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills in English and French (written and verbal).
  • Strong skills in leading motivating and coaching professional communications teams.

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.


Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
