Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision The Coordinator of Risk and Emergency Management at Fort Valley State University is responsible for directing and managing all risk management and environmental/occupational safety efforts of the university and is responsible for the Disaster Preparedness Program and Emergency Operations Plan. The Coordinator of Risk and Emergency Management reports to the Vice President for Business and Finance.

MAJOR DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans directs and trains the campus on risk management and environment/occupational safety and emergency programs to ensure the highest possible degree of safety and compliance for the campus community.
  • Executes all aspects of the Universitys environmental responsibilities including those covering occupational health industrial hygiene chemical laboratory biological radiation safety animal care and usage.
  • Compiles analyzes interprets and report accidents loss and risk exposure statistical data; and prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards.
  • Investigates accidents to determine cause factors future risk managing case files and conducting followup investigations when necessary. Reviews and files all insurance claims and ensures insurance payments are remitted in a timely manner.
  • Oversees and ensures the inspection and maintenance of the campusowned and leased facilities and residential life fire safety measures.
  • Comply with university audits as they relate to risk management or insurance.
  • Manage distribution of Certificates of Insurance to outside sources and maintain Certificates of Insurance provided to the university.
  • Drafts and maintains disaster preparedness plans and emergency operations plans.
  • Serves as the University liaison with the State of Georgia (DOAS) Risk Management.
  • Attend participate and/or coordinate emergency management scheduled training drills and exercises.
  • Assists with the activation of the University Emergency Operations Center and in the event of a largescale emergency and responds 24/7 to emergencies at the University.
  • Maintaining a detailed calendar and records of all emergency response and emergency evacuation training events activities and hosting events.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records of the work performed. Preparing clear and concise reports to monitor the success of training programs and creating related written materials.
  • Coordinates the universitys emergency notification system.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures federal state and local laws DOAS and FVSU policies and procedures related to risk management and safety.
  • Knowledge of Risk and Emergency Management programs.
  • Familiarity of Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Familiarity of National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Familiarity of the geography of the local City and Campus community.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and various software applications and specialized database systems.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department heads managers supervisors employees vendors suppliers external public and private agencies and the general public; and apply safe work practices.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Vice President for Business and Finance assigns work in terms of overall goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through conferences reports and observation of activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the FVSU employee handbook. Local state and federal laws plans and goals regarding risk management and emergency management. Maintains excellent written records of all risk management inquiries and university emergency responses for compliance purposes.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied risk and emergency management duties. Operational challenges emergency events and disasters and budget constraints contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide leadership over risk and emergency management. Success in this position helps keep the campus community safe.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with coworkers other college personnel faculty staff students law enforcement personnel outside emergency service providers local state and federal agencies and other members of the public. Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed through a combination of sitting at a desk or table and intermittently sitting along with frequent standing stooping walking bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects.
  • The work is performed in an office outside in various weather in dorms and buildings. The employee is exposed to dust dirt grease and machinery with moving parts.
  • Operate motor vehicles auto truck or van.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in a related field or combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of four 4 years of related experience required.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Experience working independently in safety and risk management field.
  • Demonstrated experience or certification in instruction preferred.
  • Ability to work weekends and flexible hours.
  • Fire Safety Certificate preferred.
  • Emergency Management Certificate preferred.
