Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for program administration implementation coordination and evaluation of a comprehensive school health program for the district.

Minimum Education/Certification:

Professional Registered Nurse with current Texas license

Bachelors or Masters Degree preferred

Certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services for Vision and Hearing screening preferred

Certification for Scoliosis Training preferred

CPR/AED/First Aid Certification required

CPR Instructor Trainer preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Organize direct coordinate and evaluate health services delivery system

Implement policies and procedures

Manage budget and personnel

Knowledge of school health community medical and healthcare services

Knowledge of the Texas Standards of Nursing Practice

Strong verbal and written organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Develop training and present information to adult learners

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; may use standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head pushing pulling and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching

Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting 45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities assist nonambulatory students

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasionally attend after school and night time activities occasionally; work inside and outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather) exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards; frequent districtwide and occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high stress environment

Regular Attendance is an essential function

Minimum Experience:

5 years of experience in school health/public health

Supervisory experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Assist with legal aspects in the Student Health Services program.
  2. Participate in developing implementing and evaluating goals and objectives for the Student Health Services Department.
  3. Develop staffing patterns and arrange nurses schedules to meet students medical needs.
  4. Assist with interviewing personnel for the Student Health Services Department and assume responsibility for job orientation and assignment.
  5. Remain current on legislation and new medical developments in school health.
  6. Participate in crisis management.
  7. Plan and coordinate instructional development programs and staff meetings for nurses and health clerks.
  8. Conduct new nurse orientation and training.
  9. Ensure all school nurses possess and updated required certificates.
  10. Make budgetary recommendations for the Student Health Services Department.
  11. Ensure all campuses have needed healthcare supplies and resources and recommend purchase replacement and repair of equipment when needed.
  12. Assist administrators with critical health issues.
  13. Provide school health consultation to principals and other administrative staff.
  14. Work closely with the Texas Department of Health and local Public Health Department during communicable disease outbreaks.
  15. Ensure district compliance with required state/federal mandates and the Texas Board of Nursing Licensure.
  16. Serve as a member of the districts advisory committee as needed. Participate in the development of health education curriculum and contribute to other committees related to health and safety issues of students and staff.
  17. Share responsibility with principals to evaluate the performance of school nurses to ensure effectiveness and develop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation in the health services area.
  18. Responsible for the management and compliance of the Automated External Defibrillator Program in the District.
  19. Responsible for the hiring and training of LVNs and assignment of bus routes schedules and campus duties.
  20. Serve as a liaison between the district and the medical community.
  21. Participate in local state and national school health organizations.
  22. Prepare state and local reports.
  23. Maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials
  24. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  25. Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
  26. Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
