Job Summary
Work with a vibrant team to help bring the University of Utah School of Dance productions to life! The Costume Technician will make patterns using pattern drafting techniques and costume renderings provided by the designer; source and alter readymade clothing; repair and embellish existing costumes; prepare fabric for cutting by washing and ironing; make theatrical crafts items; including creating millinery shoes and jewelry; and other duties as assigned to help the School of Dance achieve a complete visual picture for the designers choreographers students and audience. This is a parttime position 0.75 FTE / 1560 hours per year) with full University of Utah benefits. Applicant must have the ability to work fulltime 40 hours per week) during the Academic Year (approximately August April) each year. Initial review of applicants will begin July 29 2024.
Responsibilities
Applicants must demonstrate their potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job: Have two years of pattern drafting or an equivalent of two years of onthejob training drafting patterns. Have solid skills in sewing and altering garments. Follows precise directions and requests clarification as needed. Assess workload and manages time so deadlines are met. Available to work some evenings and weekends as needed for productions. Pattern Drafter/Draper Duties: Maintain an uptodate book of measurements. Draft patterns from costume renderings and conversations with the designer. Schedule costume fittings with students. Attend costume fittings to take notes. Make necessary alterations to patterns based on the costume fitting notes. Cut out costumes using the altered patterns. Instruct costume shop staff and workstudy students how to assemble costumes using industrial sewing machines and hand sewing techniques. Attend dress rehearsals to take notes. Supervise and mentor costume staff and work study students in best costume shop practices. Additional Duties: Work with student choreographers to pull costumes for student produced performances. Repair clean and organize costumes for the run of a production. Attend performances to serve as Wardrobe Crew. Maintain equipment and organization of the workspaces. Assist with costume rentals. Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of three years of sewing experience using various types of sewing machines and hand work or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a knowledge in textiles dying scheduling and theatrical design; excellent oral and written communications skills; and an ability to work in a detail and deadlineoriented environment required.
