Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Childrens Wisconsins are seeking a Pediatric Neurosurgeon (Assistant or Associate Professor) to join our Department of Neurosurgery in beautiful Milwaukee Wisconsin. This clinical faculty role requires a combination of teaching patient care and research. This is a unique opportunity for true multidisciplinary patient care.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery team is comprised of four boardcertified fellowshiptrained pediatric neurosurgeons with a strong commitment to clinical care teaching and research and four exceptional Advanced Practice Providers. Our practice is located at Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin and includes a dedicated Neuroscience inpatient ward.

The MCW Department of Neurosurgery has a long history of advancing the field of neurological surgery through worldclass adult and pediatric clinical care groundbreaking research and innovative education. The clinical faculty utilize surgical and nonsurgical methods to treat disorders in the skull brain spine spinal cord spinal nerves and peripheral nerves. Our research faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for their contributions across a broad array of neurologic and neurosurgical disease states including neurotrauma neurooncology spinal disorders neurovascular epilepsy and more.

Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurosurgery

Celebrating its 60th year as a part of the Medical College of Wisconsin the Department of Neurosurgery is a nationally prominent program and one of the largest such departments in the United States. It has nearly doubled in size over the last seven years from 22 faculty in 2016 to 40 in 2023. In addition there are 22 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) 14 residents and 186 staff that support the clinical research and educational missions.

The annual departmental budget is approximately $38 million; this includes more than $10.1 million in annual extramural research funding which is one of the largest research budgets of any department at MCW. Remaining funds are composed of clinical revenues up nearly $6 million since 2016 based on 2x increases in new patient volume and surgical cases as well as endowment and other proceeds.

Growing from its creation in 1963 as a Division and in 1988 as a Department and the completion of the first residents training in 1971 the Department of Neurosurgery has expanded in numerous dramatic and groundbreaking ways. It instituted the first Spine Fellowship Program in the United States in 1987; established SpineCare in 1995 the first interdisciplinary Spine Program in the nation under the leadership of Founding Chair Sanford J. Larson; who also established the Vehicle Crash Lab the worlds only car crash facility at an academic institution in 1998. In 2003 the Department established the Neuroscience Research Laboratories at Milwaukees Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center and continued innovation by forming the Translational Brain Tumor Research Program in 2008 the Neurosurgery Research Facility in 2009 and the Center for Neurotrauma Research in 2018.

Today the Departments activities include nationally recognized clinical educational and research programs with an annual budget of $38M and additional philanthropic support for the Sanford J Larson and Shekar N. Kurpad Endowed Chairs in Neurosurgery. The mission of the Department of Neurosurgery remains providing subspecialty adult and pediatric neurosurgical care that is patientcentered evidencedinformed and valuebased; conducting research that advances the science of neurologic disease and has a positive translational impact on clinical care; and promoting an environment of education and scholarship for trainees faculty and staff.

Childrens Wisconsin

Childrens Wisconsin is the states only independent health care system dedicated solely to the health and wellbeing of children. With more than 1.3 million annual connections with kids and families statewide Childrens provides a wide range of care and support everything from routine care to lifesaving advances and treatment options adoption services child advocacy and provides an insurance plan.

Childrens and its joint venture with the Medical College of Wisconsin the Childrens Specialty Group or CSG are the largest providers of pediatric healthcare in the state serving the children and families of Wisconsin with the highest level of care through their American College of Surgeons Level I Childrens Surgery Verification Center Level I Pediatric Trauma Center Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence 72bed Level IV NICU Level IV Epilepsy Center and a 72bed PICU. Insix specialties were ranked byUS News & World Report: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; gastroenterology and GI surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology. With over 70 specialties and 675 providers CSG providers had 220000 outpatient visits at 13 regional care sites 67000 emergency department/trauma center visits and over 9000 admissions in 2021. CSG anesthesiologists provided perioperative care for more than 22500 surgical interventional and complex diagnostic cases.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee the largest city in Wisconsin is located on Lake Michigans western shore. A metropolitan area with more than 1.5 million people Milwaukee is an affordable comfortable place to live work and play big enough to be exciting and uncongested enough to get around easily.
