The Department of Corrections Division of Institutions is recruiting for a Mechanic Automotive Advanced Journey/Lead at Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point Alaska.

What you will be doing:

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Foreman the primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining troubleshooting repairing inspecting diagnosing and overhauling all vehicles heavy equipment and small engines.
  • Developing and maintaining a preventative maintenance program for machines and equipment to include oil changes transmission fluid and filter changes checking coolant levels brake fluid power steering fluid air filters fuel filters tire pressure and wiper blades and keeping accurate service records.
  • Operating and inspecting machines and heavy equipment in order to diagnose defects and system failures. Determine best way to correct problems obtain quotes for parts and submit for approval.
  • Maintain warranty records on all vehicles and machines to ensure warranties are maintained on a set schedule.
  • Assists with general grounds keeping and snow removal as needed inside and outside the perimeter fences of facility

The working environment you can expect:

Goose Creek Correctional Center is a minimum/medium custody facility that houses up to 1500 inmates and employs over 350 staff. You will be working in an institutional setting with inmates daily.


Who we are looking for:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools including their designs installation uses repair and maintenance.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines parts and systems including their designs uses repair and maintenance.
  • Vehicle Operation: Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles including cars trucks or watercraft.

Minimum Qualifications

This job class is part of a series of competency based class specifications created for career areas within the Labor Trades and Crafts Unit. The class specification identifies the levels of work and wage grades within the career area the core and specific competencies of the career area required work behaviors certifications and physical requirements. The competency specification for this job class is available at in this job class are filled through Union referral except for promotions demotions transfers and emergency appointments.

  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.

If postsecondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications you must fill in the Education section of the application. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the postsecondary institution. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.


RECRUITMENT DIFFICULTIES

Starting salary may be approved up to Step C$31.85 if criteria are met.


DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must possess a valid drivers license and a Class B CDL. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

Please be aware this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has beenconvicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
