You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists the Supervisor of Transportation in evaluating road conditions during inclement weather situations including checking road conditions before school starts which could be the previous evening or early morning and providing data for inclement weather decisions to the Superintendent or designee;
Advises the Superintendent in cases of emergencies such as dangerous highway conditions trac hazards and perilous storms in the absence of the Supervisor of Transportation;
Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the Supervisor of Transportation immediately or as soon as reasonably possible;
Responds to bus and car accidents and perform duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation;
Assists with the interviewing and hiring of bus drivers and other Transportation staff;
Maintain insurance reports and state record keeping regarding crash incidents involving school personnel as related to VDOE and VACORP
Conducts and/ or attends bus driver meetings with the Supervisor of Transportation to respond to bus maintenance and safety issues;
Prepares work reports using Windows Office Applications as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation;
Responds to concerns from parents community members and school employees regarding Transportation employees stops and other related matters;
Maintains bus turnaround locations on private property of community members as needed;
Is the first resource for assisting building administrators bus drivers and parents in promoting proper conduct on the buses and solving discipline problems;
Secures supervises and provides training for school bus drivers;
Maintains bus driver personnel and medical records;
Supervises personnel assigned to the bus garage and the bus garage office;
Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times;
Coordinates vehicles for division use (field trips conferences athletic events etc.;
Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials and supplies and skills uptodate;
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities;
Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times assuring respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staffstudent relationship and the essential duty to serve as a role model;
Provides a good role model of an educated professional in appearance demeanor dress and behavior;
Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities;
Assists or develops the annual VDOE Transportation report;
Develops and updates the SCPS Transportation Manual;
Develops updates and communicates the division transportation flow program each year;
Assists with daily route assignments as needed;
Assist with school bus aide training;
May operate a school bus on a regular route as needed;
Assist in the oversight of stop sign violations and reporting to local law enforcement;
Assist in the oversight of the audio/ video program on school buses and be a liaison for building principals;
Assumes Transportation Supervisor duties if the Transportation Supervisor is absent;
Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation following school/division policies and practices;
Assists with the preparation and supervision of the annual transportation budget.
QUALIFICATIONS

Position incumbent must obtain within the first six months of employment aClass B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in Virginiato include endorsements in air brakes passenger and school bus. Virginia State School Bus Drivers Certificate or obtain proof of equivalent proficiency. Within the first year completion of the New Director/Supervisor class conducted by the Department of Education is expected. Also after two years of CDL obtainment the incumbent must become certified as a bus driver trainer.
Bachelors degree preferred.
Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to work well with others. Must have basic skills and knowledge of computer program applications.
Experience in pupil transportation is preferred but not required.
Experience or responsibilities in the following areas is also preferred:
Supervision of personnel; Routing and scheduling; Bus driver training; Accident investigation; Bus maintenance; Inventory control; Cost accounting; Budgeting record keeping; Preparation of bus bid specifications; School or school program supervision and management
Must be knowledgeable of safety standards laws codes rules regulations policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
The incumbent must be a resident of Shenandoah County or become a resident within four months of obtaining employment in this position.
Must possess or acquire a valid Virginia drivers license with a commercial drivers license Virginia State school bus drivers certificate or provide proof of equivalent proficiency.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
260 days per year Administrative salary schedule Grade 4
