Job Description

Position:

Extended Term Substitute Early Childhood Lead Teacher 11 months)

Available June through July 31 2025

Office of Student Services

The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of supports and services to students in Cambridge public schools (CPS). Our programs are dedicated to ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and students who have advanced learning needs. The Office

of Student Services is comprised of special education 504 services and the office of advanced

learning.

The Role:

The Early Childhood Lead Teacher reports to the Office of Student Services Coordinator of Preschool/Special Start and is responsible for providing professional development and support for the Special Start teachers to ensure that the needs of students with disabilities are met in both general and special education settings.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provide instructional support to both integrated and subseparate teachers
  • Provide professional development to teachers regarding appropriate instructional and inclusive strategies for students with disabilities
  • Develop PD plan/ programming
  • Develop program wide plan for increasing inclusion opportunities
  • Provide parent workshops and information sessions regarding services and supports for students ages 35
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff in the city ran preschool centers to address the needs of students with disabilities
  • Supervise/ evaluate teachers
  • Collaborate with all program staff including program special educator psychologists and behavior specialist
  • Support programmatic lead in implementing program wide plan for increasing inclusion opportunities
  • Support teachers in implementing classroombased/ tier 1 behavior supports
  • Modeling teaching strategies for classroom teachers
  • Collaborate with other program lead and complete state compliance
  • Collaborate with other early childhood district staff around Cambridge Preschool Program

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Observe Special Start classes and support teachers with curriculum implementation specially designed instruction and IEP compliance
  • Design and deliver professional development for teachers and support staff around curriculum instructional strategies and inclusive educational practices.
  • Design and deliver workshops for families focused on the schoolhome connection for students and their individual needs.
  • Under the supervision of the Coordinator track student progress around kindergarten transition.
  • Facilitate the transition of students to kindergarten (i.e. professional development scheduling).
  • Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned or apparent pursuant to department goals.

Primary Objectives:

  • Ensure implementation of the preschool curriculum and implementation of IEP goals and objectives
  • Ensure appropriate strategies are utilized specific to student needs.
  • Support the professional growth of Special Start teachers.
  • Ensure student readiness for kindergarten and beyond.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming Early Childhood Lead Teacheryou will possess many though perhaps not all of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Broad knowledge with the IEP process and special education laws pertaining to early childhood
  • Broad knowledge and experience in early childhood education and/or early intervention services
  • Above average skills in curriculum and instructional approaches
  • Excellent skills in collaboration and communication
  • Demonstrated ability in successful integration of students in the general education setting
  • Demonstrated ability designing and delivering professional development
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum development for preschool aged children
  • General knowledge of early preschool standards
  • Demonstrated ability in specially designed instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with families and community agencies
  • Willingness to be trained by the district in Crisis Prevention Intervention
  • Requires travel in and around Massachusetts
  • Bachelors degree in Special Education and/or Early Childhood education required; Masters degree preferred
  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis preferred
  • 35 years experience as a Special Education teacher or Early Childhood/Preschool teacher
  • MA DESE licensure in Moderate or Severe Disabilities and Early Childhood preferred
