Job Description

Position: Special Education Teacher

Term: 9 months

Classification: Certified

Location: Joplin High School

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree;
  • Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate CoreCompetency required

Summary

Successful Special Education Teacher Candidates must be able to demonstrate strong abilities in the developmentand implementation of strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of handicapping conditions. Must havea strong understanding of modifying the general education curriculum for specialneeds students based upon avariety of instructional techniques and technologies.

Special education teachers must have strong skills necessary to confer with parents or guardians other teacherscounselors and administrators in order to resolve students behavioral and academic needs. Strong consideration given to candidates that have Autism classroom and positive behavioral support experience.

  • Properly supervise students at all times if applicable to essential job functions.

  • Care for properly use and protect school property.
  • Maintain courteous and professional relationships with students parents/guardians other district employees and the public.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors department staff all members of the school district and community as required.
  • Provides excellence in customer service both internally and externally.
  • Complies with privacy rights and safeguards confidential and/or sensitive information pertaining to staff and students.
  • Reacts to change productively and receive and transmit constructive criticism as it relates to job duties.
  • Actively participate in professional development and obtain skills and information necessary to effectively perform job duties.
  • Conduct all official business in a professional and timely manner utilizing district technology resources.
  • Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position.
  • Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
  • Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties.
  • Read and interpret documents such as work orders safety rules and handbooks and apply to job duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to students
  • Create and implement a classroom disciplinary plan
  • Create lesson plans and activities to implement and supplement instruction
  • Participate in building grade level and subject area committees
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Maintain accurate student records including attendance grades and discipline
  • Complete and submit forms and required reports in a timely manner
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and other educational concerns
  • Participate as a member of an IEP team 504 team or other student assistance teams as requested
  • Implement special educational plans such as 504 plans individual educational programs and individual health plans
  • Report suspected abuse neglect discrimination and harassments as directed by Board policy
  • Prepare lesson plans for use by a substitute teacher
  • Subject area teachers may have additional duties and responsibilities

  • Occasionally lift 50 pounds
  • Frequently walk up and down stairs while assisting students
  • Frequently walk on a variety of ground surfaces including but not limited to paved gravel grass or dirt
  • Frequently bend and twist the torso and neck
  • Frequently squat or kneel to the ground
  • Frequently use repetitive arm wrist and hand movements
  • Use close distance and peripheral vision as well as depth perception
  • Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously
  • Move around the classroom
  • Read handwritten or printed material

Conditions and Environment

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation.
