Job Purpose:
Caterpillar in Peterlee UK is currently hiring a Tooling & Robotics Section Manager. As a Tooling & Robotics Section Manager you will supervise and provide leadership to a team of Multi Skilled Tooling & Robotics Team Leaders Toolmakers and Robot Technicians while adhering to Caterpillars core values of Integrity Excellence Teamwork Commitment and Sustainability. The Section Manager is responsible for internal tooling manufacture as well as ensuring that a high level of uptime is achieved on a wide range of tooling fixturing and robotic equipment throughout the facility in support of Operations achieving build plan.
Job duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Manage the manufacture of tooling and fixturing for the facility overseeing tool room operations including:
- Cutting
- Fabrication
- Welding
- Machining
- Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- System Testing
- Provide technical direction and logical approach to Tooling & Robotics Team
- Utilising the Computerised Maintenance Management System (SAP PM Agility etc) to review previous breakdown data and record actions taken on breakdown recoveries
- Management of planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown maintenance and programming on:
- Robotic Welding Systems
- Robotic Painting Systems
- Fabrication and Assembly Build Fixtures.
- Driving breakdown root cause identification and countermeasure implementation
- Prioritise department resource to meet operational requirements.
- Identify opportunities to reduce Mean Time to Repair and increase Mean Time Between Failures
- Manage the introduction of new process tooling and robot programs development through New Product introduction.

- Planning: Tactical Strategic:
- Contributes to shortterm operational plans.
- Anticipates and adapts to plan changes.
- Monitors progress of work against plan as required to meet objectives.
- Reports variances and makes agreedupon corrections.
- Under guidance develops tactical plan for own direct responsibility.
- Problem Solving:
- Gains agreement on the problemsolving process risk assessment decision points and criteria.
- Trains others in the process of eliciting alternatives and assessing their impact.
- Orchestrates the resolution of highimpact and crossfunctional problems.
- Successfully organizes problem solvers and stakeholders for highimpact problems.
- Predicts and explains longterm trends and implications for alternatives.
- Monitors industry for best practices and new techniques in problemsolving.
- Manufacturing Preventive Maintenance:
- Coordinates resources for maintenance repair and overhaul of Tooling & Robotic Equipment.
- Designs procedures for preventive measures to help improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Diagnoses problems and malfunctions in a wide variety of manufacturing equipment.
- Oversees that safety and health standards adhere to all tasks.
- Updates preventive maintenance systems for all schedules of manufacturing equipment.
Plant Operation and Maintenance:
- Participates in the evaluation and selection of tooling and robotic systems.
- Participates in planning for automating operations and retooling of an assembly line.
- Consults on operations routing and backup capabilities.
- Analyses plant floor operations; evaluates trends and implements corrective actions as necessary.
- Works with complex issues in all major production runs and their criticalities for the manufacturing organization.
- Advises others on key aspects of effective and efficient operation and workload optimization.
- Proven experience in Leading Coaching and Developing Teams
- Resource coordination for planned preventative maintenance breakdown repair and tooling manufacturer.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal
- Experience working in a busy manufacturing environment.
- Ability to drive improvements in team performance and safety culture.
- A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
Top candidates will also have:
- Engineering/Manufacturing Degree or equivalent experience in tooling manufacture robotic systems and/or operational leadership
- NEBOSH/IOSH Qualification or evidence of safety improvement activities
- Excellent PC Presentation and Communication Skills
- Knowledge of PUWER & UKCA regulations
- Machining and Fabrication & Welding Knowledge
