FIRST LEGO League / Robotics Club Coach Needed
Location: Williston Central School
Terms of Employment:
Hours: An average of 2 afternoons per week and 1.5 hours per session from September until the end of January:
There is an additional couple of hours of preparation time each week for an approximate total of 5 hours per week until the end of January.
The FLL season wraps up with the Vermont State Competition in January 2026 at Norwich University. It is a Sunday and it is an all-day event with teams from around the state.
Pay: Compensated per Category B of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (page 90)
Description of FIRST LEGO Challenge:
FIRST LEGO League introduces science technology engineering and math (STEM) to children in grades 4-8 through fun exciting hands-on learning. FIRST LEGO League participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided global robotics program helping todays students and teachers build a better future together. In FIRST LEGO League students engage in hands-on STEM experiences building confidence growing their knowledge and developing habits of learning.
Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge as teams of students across grades 4-8 engage in research problem-solving coding and engineering building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. As part of Challenge teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.
FLL Coach Job Description:
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) coaches are individuals from all backgrounds and disciplines who work with students to share their knowledge and guide them through the season. Many coaches may work with other adult volunteers who serve as Mentors and can assist by contributing on a weekly basis during the program season or support the team with subject matter expertise on an as-needed basis.
In addition Coaches & Mentors help students to embrace FIRST LEGO League Core Values:

FLL Coaches Will:
Work with the school to specifically invite students who have been historically marginalized in the areas of Computer Science and robotics
Desire to work with children in 4th-8th grade.
Organize monitor and coach the FIRST LEGO League team
Help the team set realistic goals
Facilitate meetings and help the team to coordinate the work
Perform administrative responsibilities such as tournament registration and communication
Serve as a liaison between and relay all aspects of FIRST LEGO League guidelines and rules to the team volunteers and families
Teach students the principles of Robotics and/or facilitate mentor instruction
Display kindness patience and professionalism.
Nurture a sense of ownership among team members for their teams project and core values.
Be available to coach the team twice per week in the fall with meetings increasing during the period leading up to the competition (late January). Meetings vary based on the activities needed to ensure preparedness for all upcoming on/off-season events.
Preferred candidates will have:
Recent experience with FIRST Lego League Robotics
Recent experience working with fourth-eighth-grade students
Experience with basic computer functions including troubleshooting (e.g. saving and managing files wireless Bluetooth connections)
