As a custodian you have an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness of our facilities which is crucial in supporting the learning and working environment of the University. Periodic shift work may be required. In addition to operating independently to perform the full range of custodial tasks work leaders exercise some control over the continual work product of others.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Duties: Assist in maintaining a healthy environment by providing outstanding custodial service for campus facilities. In the area of floorcare duties include sweeping dust mopping wet mopping vacuuming and spot cleaning carpet auto scrubbing spray buffing burnishing refinishing wood concrete and vinyl composite floors (removing floor finish by sanding or stripping then applying seal and wax) and carpet extraction. Cleaning duties include cleaning and relamping lighting fixtures cleaning water fountains emptying and cleaning waste containers cleaning walls doors and windows dusting flat surfaces and vents cleaning and sanitizing all restroom fixtures urinals and toilet bowls cleaning toilet partitions and doors sinks and mirrors restocking soap and paper products straightening and moving furniture shampooing upholstered furniture setting up tables chairs and media equipment for meetings cleaning dry erase boards securing areas as required (locking and unlocking rooms and buildings) inputting work requests and filling out time log in maintenance management system (Schooldude) cleaning and maintaining equipment turning lights on and off using proper personal protective equipment (gloves goggles grippers aprons safety shoes) and attending training meetings on safety cleaning procedures and equipment and product use. Other related duties as assigned.

Decision Making: Within limits prescribed by the operation choices involve selecting alternatives that affect the manner and speed with which tasks are carried out. These choices do not affect the standards or results of the operation itself because there is typically only one correct way to carry out the operation. These alternatives include independent choice of such things as priority and personal preference for organizing and processing the work proper tools or equipment speed and appropriate steps in the operation to apply. By nature the data needed to make decisions can be numerous but are clear and understandable so logic is needed to apply the prescribed alternative. Positions can be taught what to do to carry out assignments and any deviation in the manner in which the work is performed does not change the end result of the operation.

Complexity: Positions apply established standard guidelines that cover work situations and alternatives. Action taken is based on learned specific guidelines that permit little deviation or change as the task is repeated. Any alternatives to choose from are clearly right or wrong at each step.

Line/Staff Authority: The direct field of influence the work of a position has on the organization is as a work leader. The work leader is partially accountable for the work product of two or more fulltime equivalent positions including timeliness correctness and soundness. At least one of the subordinate positions must be in the same series or at a comparable conceptual level. Typical elements of direct control over other positions by a work leader include assigning tasks monitoring progress and workflow checking the product scheduling work and establishing work standards. The work leader provides input into supervisory decisions made at higher levels including signing leave requests and approving work hours. This level may include positions performing supervisory elements that do not fully meet the criteria for the next level in this factor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS SUBSTITUTIONS CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS:

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a CMU employee.

One 1 year of relevant experience of custodial experience which must have been performed within a business/corporation type setting or similar.

Must possess a valid drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications: Excellent customer service and timemanagement skills and the ability to follow directions.

*Custodial work is defined as primary work duties which include but are not limited to caring for and maintaining offices within an organization. Custodian work includes buffing polishing and disinfecting floors cleaning lavatories as well as performing general dusting and vacuuming within an office environment.

Conditions of Employment: In accordance with CMU policy finalists must successfully complete a criminal background check preemployment physical and drug screen. Must be able to exert up to or in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally 20 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly. Position will require; walking climbing stooping balancing kneeling crouching crawling reading reaching handling fingering feeling talking hearing near acuity far acuity depth perception and color vision.
