Start your journey towards success! The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is now accepting applications for Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in Training positions at Troop H Communications!

**The current new hire salary for a Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in Training is a flat rate of $40343 annually regardless of education or experience level UNLESS the selected candidate has previous recent experience working as an NC State Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in the last 3 years/36 months (such experience will be taken into consideration).**

This position performs professional analytical work in coordinating the response operations warranted by various emergency and disaster occurrences. This position is also responsible for quickly and accurately processing prioritizing and disseminating emergency and nonemergency information from multiple sources and under stressful conditions to effectively coordinate the resources available to respond to public and officer safety concerns.The work location is Troop H Communications Center in Monroe NC (Union County).

Job duties include the following:
  • Receiving emergency and nonemergency requests for service from the following sources: general public allied publicsafety agencies Highway Patrol and other local state and federal law enforcement staff.
  • Receiving requests via telephone radio and computer communications networks.
  • Recording and assigning these requests according to established directives policies and guidelines according to priority.
  • Operating multichannel radio workstations telephone and various computer systems in fulfilling these responsibilities.
  • Dispatching Emergency Medical Services with other emergency equipment when necessary.
  • Speaking clearly and distinctly.


**Once hired the new employee must complete a 640hour Basic Training Program and required training courses attain NC Sheriffs Standard Certification complete one year of onthejob training and receive a performance evaluation of Meets Expectations or higher. Upon completion of these requirements the employee will advance to the full responsibilities of a Highway Patrol Telecommunicator and receive a $2272 increase to a salary of $42615.**

The Highway Patrol Communications System provides 24hour continuous emergency nonemergency and administrative communications services for NCSHP the general public and other State and Federal Agencies.

To qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Experience using radio equipment in an emergency response setting (such as police fire EMS military) or in an emergency communications center.
  • Experience receiving and transmitting communication messages of a critical nature.
  • Experience in reading paper maps and/or using mapping programs (e.g. Google/Bing).
PLEASE NOTE: Qualified recommended applicant(s) must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Background Investigation Drug Screening Test and Psychological Evaluation. Once hired theymust successfully complete Basic Telecommunicator Training and be eligible to obtain and maintain DCI certification (i.e. must not have prior or pending convictions of felonies and/or misdemeanors that occurred within the last four years).
