REPORTS TO: AMI Supervisor
FLSA STATUS: NonExempt
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System; Required satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period.
PAY GRADE: 111
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes CDL subject to random drug testing per the AthensClarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to perform manual functions associated with installation repairs and maintenance of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meters and other AMI infrastructure components. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: participating in the construction installation maintenance and repair of all AMI infrastructure components; responding to complaints concerning water leaks low pressure and high bills; operating and maintaining equipment; and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Job Related Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE:
TuesdayFriday7:00 AM to 5:30 PM subject to changing back to MondayFriday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM participation in 24/7 on call rotation mandatory.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation responsible for the safety readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACCs safe driving policy.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent with one year of experience involving water meter installation and repair or mechanical experience required; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this position.

A valid drivers license is required.

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Georgia Commercial Drivers License within 6 months of hire.

Must obtain Confined Space Entry Certification within 6 months of hire.

One year of experience involving AMI water meter installation and repair preferred.

Essential Duties Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or allinclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Participates in the repairs maintenance and installation of commercial and residential AMI water meters including through 8 meters collectors and all other AMI infrastructure components.

Plugs/pulls meters to connect/disconnect water service as appropriate.

Replaces meter boxes and lids and AMI antennas transmitters and data collectors changes cutoff valves; replaces meter couplings; raises tests and relocates meters.

Installs concrete vaults; finishes concrete and backfills around vaults; landscapes areas; lays brick; replaces asphalt.

Tests meters of various sizes for accuracy using specialized test equipment.

Operates and maintains AMI meter testing software and equipment inclusive of radio electronics diagnostics trouble shooting and repairs to ensure reading accuracy.

Operates equipment such as a utility truck and or dump truck in order to pull excavator forklift frontend loader jackhammer air compressor gaspowered pump; assures preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Responds to complaints regarding water pressure high bills water leaks and other related problems determines responsibility for leaks.

Rereads meters as directed or requested by customers to ensure accuracy.

Verifies metered water service as required.

Gathers materials and supplies used in daily activities.

Advises customers of water business policies operating procedures and charges.

Reports illegal meter tampering.

Responds to emergency service calls as required.

Responds to routine requests for information from officials employees members of the staff the public or other individuals.

Prepares and/or receives various forms reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.

Reads and interprets blueprints maps and plats.

Assumes the duties of the AMI Tech II in his/her absence.

Operate data collecting hardware software and laptop/tablet/smartphone in field to analyze and communicate data.

Participates in the troubleshooting of AMI system issues i.e. track and problem solve issues between the meter interface unit and its connectivity to the fixed radio frequency network.

Performs other duties assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the policies procedures and activities of the Public Utilities Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of AMI Tech I.

Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.

Skill in AMI water meter maintenance repair and operation the design and operation of various AMI meters

Skill in operating various hand tools machinery and equipment including a forklift packer jackhammer air compressor gaspowered pump pipe saw pipe horn and twoway radio.

Skill in working with AMI hardware/software AMI handheld unit and all other AMI components.

Skill in reading ACC Public Utilities GIS infrastructure viewer maps blueprints and subdivision plats.

Skill in installing and repairing AMI water meters and other infrastructure components and in the installation and operation of backflow prevention devices.

Skill in finishing concrete.

Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members and other ACC departments/divisions.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to use independent judgment in routine and nonroutine situations.

Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.

Ability to plan organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a backhoe dump truck forklift frontend loader boom crane packer jackhammer air compressor gaspowered pump tapping machine pipe saw pipe horn twoway radio etc. Must be able to use body members to work move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting fingering grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.

DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data people or things.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to hear speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from coworkers assistants or supervisors.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of blueprints maps plats informational documentation directions instructions methods and procedures. Requires the ability to prepare reports forms applications etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation grammar diction and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise voice control and confidence.

INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively basic principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management.

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative or technical languages which may include mechanical/plumbing terminology.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; calculate decimals/percentages; perform calculations involving variables formulas square roots and polynomials.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length width and shape visually with a variety of machinery and equipment including a backhoe dump truck forklift frontend loader boom crane packer jackhammer air compressor gaspowered pump tapping machine pipe saw pipe horn twoway radio etc.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands fingers and eyes accurately in using equipment. Requires the ability to lift bend push pull manipulate equipment/tools and objects as the position necessitates.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated machinery and equipment hand tools mechanic tools power tools landscaping materials and plumbing supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via twoway radio.
