Job Description

Carnegie Mellon Universitys Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research home of the undergraduate interdisciplinary Program in Environmental and Sustainability Studies invites applications for a fulltime teachingtrack Assistant Professor in Environmental Humanities. Teachers and scholars engaged in a broad range of Environmental Humanities are encouraged to apply. Candidates should identify ways their teaching emphasizes:

We welcome applications from Humanitiescentric teachers and scholars with a range of disciplinary backgrounds including but not limited to: History Sociology Anthropology Literatures and Languages Philosophy Science and Technology Studies American Studies Area Studies Geography Ethnic Studies and interdisciplinary Environmental and Sustainability Studies.

In addition to teaching courses in Environmental Humanities a successful candidate will advise undergraduates on interdisciplinary pathways for completion of the Minor or Additional Major in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. A normal teaching load for teachingtrack faculty would be 3/2. For this position approximately 1 course per semester is replaced with oneonone advising of students in the program. The program includes a Minor and an Additional Major in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. Thus the candidate will teach courses on a 2 plus 1 / 1 plus 1 semester load: 3 courses per year plus the equivalent of 2 courses in advising per year.

The Teaching Track at Carnegie Mellon is a careeroriented nontenure faculty track with renewable fixed terms and opportunities for promotion from Assistant to Associate and ultimately Full Teaching Professor. This position emphasizes teaching curriculum development and supervising student projects. Scholarship is expected with recognized contributions either to pedagogy or disciplinary research. Teaching Track faculty serve on committees alongside other faculty at the College and University levels.
