General Function

  • Under the supervision of the Environmental Safety Project Manager (ESPM) the Environmental Safety Assistant assists the ESPM with environmental and safety issues affecting the management and operations of properties and facilities maintained by the Wicomico County Board of Education.

Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree in environmental health and safety or a related field with two (2) to four (4) years actual management experience is preferred. An associates degree or two (2) year degree in a non-related field would be considered providing the applicant can show multiple years of experience in the environmental/safety and project management field. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
  • Thorough knowledge of the common practices tools and terminology of environmental safety construction practices techniques materials and equipment relating to school construction and maintenance
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering plans specifications and drawings; ability to read and interpret plans specifications and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with trade
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment
  • Ability to work from sketches drawings plans or specifications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects at various stages.
  • Reacts to change productively.
  • Ability to use a computer and a wide variety of commercially available software.
  • Possess good interpersonal communication skills. Can adjust to a flexible work schedule.
  • Maintains regular on-time attendance.
  • Willingness to work beyond an eight (8) hour day and respond to after-hours emergency calls.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the ESPM with reviewing current and proposed legislation and/or federal and state registers to ensure that Wicomico County Board of Education is well informed of and in compliance with laws rules and/or regulations which may pertain to safety and the environment.
  • Assist the ESPM with implementing the Integrated Pest Management plan lead and Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) programs.
  • Identify and provide support to sub-contractors to resolve any pest lead or AHERA issues.
  • Maintain chemical sensitivity registered Lead AHERA and pest management. documentation and ensure proper notifications are sent out per regulation.
  • Respond to air/environmental quality concerns and situations involving health and/or safety of students staff and public.
  • Perform hands-on investigations; makes recommendations; coordinates and oversees sub-contractor sampling and testing efforts.
  • Assist with maintaining comprehensive safety training to include environmental and construction related topics and loss control programs to include procedures for compliance with enforcement of all state federal and local laws and regulations.
