Job Description

This position is effective 7/1/2025

Position Title: Sr. Technology Support Specialist

Pay Grade: 20 Period of Employment: 12 months

Description Approved/ Revised: 06/2024 FLSA Status: NonExempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Coordinator of Information Technology

General Responsibilities: Responsible for the more complex desktop applications and basic network services for schools and offices. Provides guidance and oversight to Technology Support Specialists.

Essential Duties:

Technical Support

  • Provides technical support for the school building(s) assigned including but not limited to:
    • Provides installation maintenance service and repair of computer equipment.
    • Troubleshoots computer hardware software and peripheral system problems.
    • Coordinates with support vendors for repair and replacement services of faulty/obsolete computer equipment and components.
    • Sets up installs and tests new computer hardware and software applications.
    • Designs implements and reviews preventative maintenance programs.
    • Responds to service requests and provides customer support inperson and/or remotely via telephone email or other communication methods.
    • Leads in analyzing strategies to support computerbased technologies utilized for student assessment and testing.
    • Interacts with Information Technology staff to install troubleshoot repair and provide reliable network infrastructure and services.
    • Assists Information Technology staff in providing Active Directory accounts and email and monitors networkbased services such as home folders and applications.
    • Prepares written documentation to assist staff with technology use.
  • Provides technical training concerning servers operating systems and all relevant software tools and utilities.
  • Performs basic project management tasks for division technology projects.
  • Documents the network in accordance with Information Technology guidelines.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements technology policies and procedures as defined in the MCPS School Board Regulations and Policies.
  • Tracks all work in the IT ticketing system.
  • Maintains a current inventory of all technology equipment and assists in the administration of the inventory control system.
  • Maintains a license inventory for all software purchased by MCPS.
  • Attends meetings held by the Information Technology Department.
  • Works directly with the Information Technology staff in planning designing executing implementing modifying and evaluating a wide variety of complex technical projects applications and systems.
  • Supports the Coordinator of Information Technology with hardware and software purchases.
  • Verifies that all equipment purchases meet MCPS approved standards.
  • Monitors the activities of all Technology Support Specialists and reports to the Coordinator/Director of Information Technology as needed.
  • Assists the Coordinator of Information Technology with evaluations of Technology Support Specialists.
  • Assists with information management in the administrative areas of the school.

Staff Development

  • Communicates training needs of local building staff to the Instructional Technology Training Specialists.
  • Provides technical knowledge to staff on tasks as listed in the MCPS Technology Plan.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Requisite Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with Windows and Apple platforms as well as experience in the administration of standalone and networked hardware software and cabling.
  • Working knowledge of all installed instructional and administrative software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for working with teachers administration and students.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking; including network addressing switching routing DHCP and 802.11 wireless networks.
  • Serve as role model.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to support systems and applications.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred.
  • Five 5 years of successful fulltime experience supporting computer hardware network topologies Intranet/Internet services and software.
  • Certifications in current technologies highly desirable.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia drivers license and a positive DMV driver rating.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Some climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping or repetitive motions required.
