Archivist
Classification: Full time Permanent

The Tilhqotin National Government (TNG) is the official First Nations government serving the Tilhqotin Nation. TNG is located in Williams Lake British Columbia and serves six communities including Esdilagh Tideldel Yuneitin Tletinqox Xeni Gwetin and Tlesqox.
The Archivist is responsible for providing expert knowledge about archival records and cultural belongings in a variety of formats and engages in multiple research strategies to gain access to their content often using resources such as corporate databases and web access. The Archivist conducts original research both as an integral part of the acquisition and processing of records and the provision of reference and information services.
Key Responsibilities:
Locate repatriate/acquire arrange and describe a wide variety of physical and digital archival materials pertaining to the Tilhqotin Nation
Arrange and describe existing archival materials currently held by the Tilhqotin National Government (TNG)
Establish the Tilhqotin Nation Archives:
Set up the physical space for the Tilhqotin Nation Archives
Develop policies and procedures for managing archival materials ensuring compliance with relevant legislation professional standards the principles of OCAP (ownership control access and protection) and culturally specific Tilhqotin principles
Follow standard chain of custody practices
Working with the individual communities to ensure that the information gathered is shared
Help obtain and subsequent implementation and use of archival software (TBD)
Collaborate with other TNG departments and employees especially IT and the Data Manager to ensure integration between archival and other records management systems
Manage the Tilhqotin Nation Archives in line with relevant policies and procedures
Facilitate access to records and information in a culturally sensitive manner with particular emphasis on access to records by Tilhqotin members and community governments
Support the repatriation of Tilhqotin ancestral belongings from museums private collections and archaeological repositories through information management
Work with TNG colleagues to develop and implement procedures for confidential access to special collections pertaining to traditional knowledge
Establish and maintain a small research library of select historical archaeological ethnographic (etc. materials
Funding permitting mentor and supervise junior archivist and summer student(s)
Requirements:
Degree in archival science or archival studies or an equivalent combination of related education experience and/or training. Related experience may include working in a GLAM institution a government ministry or in a community organization such a cultural centre or Indigenous government office preferably in a role related to archives records management cultural heritage or traditional knowledge.
Degrees in library science records management information studies museum studies history or anthropology will also be considered with relevant experience
Required proficiency with records management or document management software general information systems
Required proficiency with Microsoft Office
Experience interpreting and applying legislation and drafting policy related to privacy acts records management acts and other policies and procedures related to the management of records
Other Knowledge and Skills:
Experience working in Indigenous communities considered an asset
Experience working with Indigenous records and British Columbia colonial records considered an asset
Ability to work alone with initiative and independence
Effective oral and written communication skills organisational skills and relationshipbuilding and conflict management skills
Cultural sensitivity and competency with the ability to work with Tilhqotin Elders Youth community staff and Leaders in a respectful and thoughtful manner
Working Conditions:
Position is located in Williams Lake remote work will not be possible
Travel to six Tilhqotin communities required; travel outside the region may also be required
Ability to attend and conduct presentations
Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and additional hardware
Overtime as required
Lifting or moving up to 40 lbs required
