Job Description
The Department of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech announces an opening for a tenuretrack advanced Assistant/Associate Professor with a specialization in adult development and aging. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research program focuses on one or more of the following content areas in the context of aging: health disparities; risk factors for physical cognitive psychological or social vulnerabilities; the role of technology in aging; longterm care; interventions to maintain health wellbeing and/or cognition among older adults; and the aging brain including in the context of Alzheimers disease and related dementias. Successful candidates should have a strong demonstrated record of externally funded research peerreviewed publications and innovative teaching.
Particularly related to research the successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in Human Development & Family Science as well as with colleagues in relevant departments institutes and research centers across the Blacksburg campus (e.g. Engineering Computer Science Counselor Education Neuroscience Human Nutrition Foods and Exercise Psychology and Public Health; Center for Gerontology). Additionally the candidate should explore research and other opportunities for collaboration that exist with the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine on the Roanoke Health Science and Technology campus as well as with faculty at the universitys northern Virginia campuses in the greater Washington D.C. metro area.
Required Qualifications
1. Expertise in one or more of the following areas of study: health disparities; risk factors for physical cognitive psychological or social vulnerabilities; the role of technology in aging; longterm care; interventions to maintain health wellbeing and/or cognition among older adults; and the aging brain including in the context of Alzheimers disease and related dementias.
2. Record of scholarly leadership on topics relevant to adult development and aging.
3. Demonstrated record of external research support.
4. Evidence of teaching and mentoring effectiveness as demonstrated by creating an inclusive learning environment employing innovative teaching practices and mentoring underrepresented students.
All candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in human development psychology or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
An interdisciplinary perspective that integrates a variety of methodological approaches and theories from related disciplines such as developmental science behavioral science psychology neuroscience genetics and computational science.
