Job Description

Academic Advisor for TRIO Student Support Services

TRIOStudent Support Services is a United States Department of Education Title IV grantfunded TRIO program designed to increase retention and graduation rates of lowincome firstgeneration college students and students with disabilities through an array of retentionbased services. The Academic Advisor provides direct services for new and continuing TRIO students at the University of Mary. Services include providing academic advising services for new and atrisk students through proactive mentoring and instruction. This is a grant funded position.

Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian Catholic Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide academic career transfer financial and personal advising to program participants and referrals to additional services as needed. Be available to students by appointment and through dropin hours and attending campus activities. Participate in occasional program activities that may require night/weekend hours.
  • Provide studentcentered advising and mentoring to students employing a model where the advisor proactively reaches out to the student in order to form and maintain a strong working relationship with the student.
  • Maintain current records of activities and services provided and perform other administrative duties as assigned for the grant and annual reports.
  • Collaborate with faculty staff and other student programs and services to identify and assist students.
  • Instruct a freshmen seminar course for TRIO students serving as the academic advisor for assigned students enrolled and attend Presidents Seminars as needed.
  • Update and maintain TRIOSSS social media accounts.
  • Attend meetings with supervisors as scheduled and take appropriate direction to implement goals policies and procedures as requested.
  • Assist with planning TRIOSSS activities throughout the year.
  • Utilize assessments in the evaluation of students strengths and needs and to support the retention/graduation goals and objectives of the TRIOSSS program.
  • Understand and comply with federal laws and regulations that govern the TRIOSSS program.
  • Assist with the Universitys student recruitment program by being available to meet with students during campus visits and by assisting with programs for prospective students sponsored by the Admissions Office.
  • Serve on University committees and task forces as assigned.

Desired Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience include:

  • A masters degree in student affairs/student development education counseling psychology or another field closely related to the position responsibilities is strongly preferred; a minimum of a bachelors degree in a field directly related to the positions responsibilities is required.

Required:

  • A minimum of three years experience interacting with high school level and/or college level students who came from disadvantaged backgrounds in the areas of instruction advising counseling leadership mentoring or tutoring in line with the goals and objectives of the TRIOSSS program
  • Professional experience communicating regularly and effectively orally and in writing with a diverse client or student base

Preferred:

  • Experience as an academic advisor tutor teacher or a position providing similar support services to college/university students
  • Candidate who has succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the projects target population
  • Experience documenting student services in a federallyfunded educational program
  • Professional experience managing and engaging an audience through social media
  • Upholds andsupports the Christian Catholic Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality inthe Office of Academic Affairs and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedicts admonition that all be received as Christ

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the developmental needs of students and best practices in working with students who are at risk for attrition; ability to work effectively with firstgeneration students students from diverse cultures and backgrounds students with disabilities nontraditional students and other atrisk populations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in student retention academic advising firstyear experience programs and student services at the college or university level
  • Ability to effectively present to groups generate professional reports and communicate in person and over electronic mediums
  • Strong command of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using a learning management system to supplement instruction and using student advising software to track degree completion is preferred
  • Ability to prioritize workload perform work duties independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate with a variety of persons including students parents faculty staff and outside agencies
  • Ability to maintain student and program confidentiality and adhere to FERPA requirements
