ORGANIZATION
Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated in Watertown and Cambridge near Boston Massachusetts. Founded in 1831 and visited by over 200000 people each year Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark recognized as the first rural cemetery and the inspiration for the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. As an active cemetery Mount Auburn inspires all who visit comforts the bereaved and commemorates the dead in a landscape of exceptional beauty. As an accredited arboretum Mount Auburn features 5000 trees and more than 20000 plants overall.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists the Irrigation System and Infrastructure Manager performing maintenance and repair of the irrigation system drainage system roads and paths throughout the Cemetery. Supports facilities maintenance work as directed by supervisor. May be required to assist other departments including interments as assigned by supervisor. Duties require the employee to work outside in all weather conditions and following all safety rules and regulations.

Assists the Irrigation System and Infrastructure Manager performing maintenance and repair of the irrigation system drainage system roads and paths throughout the Cemetery. Duties require the employee to work outside in all weather conditions and following all safety rules and regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the direct supervision of the irrigation system manager assist in the installation repair and maintenance of the Cemeterys irrigation system. Work includes trenching for new installations; repairing flushing and replacing irrigation valves layout and installation of micro emitters and sprinkler heads.
- Assists in the replacement and repair of 2inch isolation valves in the road. This includes but is not limited to cutting asphalt threading 2 inch galvanized pipe cutting and coupling 8inch ductile iron pipe.
- Performs daily maintenance checks on fountain pumps and filters. Pressure washes fountains as needed.
- Assists in the repair of roads and paths including cutting asphalt filling potholes minor line striping.
- Assists in the maintenance of the drainage system including cleaning catch basins area drains and drain covers.
- Helps with the maintenance of the pond aeration systems (replacing pumps fans etc..
- At the discretion of the supervisor assist the Facilities Department with routine maintenance or special projects.
- Ability to use all vehicles and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Ability to operate equipment ranging from jackhammers cutoff saw hand power tools.
- Assist with snow removal including hand shoveling and snow blower operations.
- Follow all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks including wearing personal protective equipment proper handling of chemicals ladder safety and lifting and moving heavy objects. Bring unsafe conditions to the attention of the Irrigation and Infrastructure Systems Manager.
- Always represent Mount Auburn appropriately when at work in demeanor attitude uniform and written and verbal communication.
- Assist with any Cemetery business including special meetings conferences Friends of Mount Auburn events and public events as needed.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Drivers license required
- One year of irrigation or similar trades experience or trade school required including experience operating power tools in a safe manner
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Ability to communicate successfully with staff and visitors
- Ability to read maps of the Cemetery grounds including irrigation and drainage maps
- Ability to use radio communication equipment
- Ability to be flexible as work demands change
- Comfortable with conducting work in confined spaces
- Ability to acquire a Mass State Hoisting license in a calendar year
- Follow all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks including wearing personal protective equipment (eye and hearing protecting gloves etc. proper handling of chemicals ladder safety and lifting and moving heavy objects.
- Bring unsafe conditions to the attention of the Irrigation System & Infrastructure Manager and makes suggestions to improve safe working practices.
REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Heavy work that includes moving adjusting or carrying objects including shoveling earth or snow weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis
- Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions
