Job Description

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) is made up of every undergraduate student at the University of Nevada. ASUN provides a means for students to voice concerns and address issues at the university local state national and international levels.

Responsibilities

The duties of Department of IDEA Commissioners are as follows:

  • Commissioner of Social Justice and Policy:

  • Shall track University local state and national policies that affect students as well as research diverse and inclusive initiatives happening at other institutions. The Commissioner of Social Justice and Policy shall research and analyze policy and provide data for the Director to present to the Senate.

  • Commissioner of Projects and Events:

  • Shall coordinate and organize any events initiatives and efforts to educate students faculty and staff on diverse topics and to empower underrepresented students.

  • Commissioner of Marketing and Outreach:

  • Shall mediate communication between the Department and various multicultural groups and organizations both on campus and in the community as well as aid in the promotion and marketing of department projects and events to more effectively address specific concerns of underrepresented students and faculty and allow for more efficient of projects events and initiatives

  • Additional duties:

  • Shall act as liaisons between students that identify in diverse groups ranging from but not limited to: race culture LGBTQIA internationalism socioeconomic status disabilities and religion as appointed by the Director

  • Shall be responsible for highlighting and addressing issues to their specific breaches and plan their own events catering to their designated groups of people.

  • Shall be required to attend scheduled Department of IDEA meetings unless the presiding officer grants an excused absence before the meeting convening.

  • Shall mentor and educate IDEA Intern(s) that the Officers may be assigned to.

Required Qualifications

During my tenure in this appointed position I agree to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada Reno

  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 7 credits

  • Perform all duties and instructions outlined by the ASUN Governing Documents

  • Uphold the Nevada Student Code of Conduct

  • Meet all deadlines set forth attend all required meetings and training work scheduled hours properly complete and submit HR paperwork on time assist in the promotion of the mission of ASUN and Nevada behave in a manner that is ethical maintain a high level of integrity

  • Other duties as called upon by my position

I understand if I do not adhere to the items outlined in this agreement or what is stated in the ASUN Governing Documents my position may be subject to disciplinary action by the ASUN Judicial Council and/or the University of Nevada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fields such as sociology social justice ethnic studies gender studies psychology education political science or related social sciences fields through course of study previous work experience or extracurricular activities

  • Demonstrated involvement in initiatives or organizations focused on promoting inclusivity diversity and social justice

  • Knowledge of IDEA (Inclusivity Diversity Equity and Accessibility) principles frameworks and best practices with an understanding of systemic inequities and intersectional identities

  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with politically ideologically and culturally diverse people and communities

  • Excellent organization and project management skills in a teambased environment with multiple projects

  • Flexibility and adaptability within role; ability to time manage and prioritize tasks

  • Willingness to mentor an intern during the fall and spring semesters

  • Commitment to advancing the foundational pillars of the Home Means Nevada Platform through:

  • Conducting direct outreach initiatives climate surveys and focus groups to understand and support underrepresented groups

  • Sponsoring events through the Multicultural Center and student coalitions such as the Multicultural Greek Council to build visibility and grow spaces for communitybuilding and activism

  • Developing strong connections with the Center for Student Engagement and other campus departments to increase awareness of student resources to promoting accessibility and student belonging

  • Highlighting identitybased communities on campus and in the local community consistently and throughout the academic year

  • Advancing initiatives for continued ADA and physical accessibility infrastructure improvements

  • Expanding understanding of institutional policies and procedures related to diversity equity and inclusion including recruitment and retention efforts for underrepresented groups
