Job Description
- Chair the Audit Risk and Improvement Committee of City of Newcastle
- Provide your expert leadership and advice on all things risk governance and controls
- 4year term
- Five meetings per year (facetoface and virtual)
City of Newcastle (CN) is inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals for appointment as an external independent member to Councils Audit Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC).
As the Chairperson of the committee you will be required to understand and observe the requirements of the Office of Local Governments Guidelines for risk management and internal audit for local government in NSW and CNs ARIC Charter. The ARIC is a key component of Councils governance framework responsible for assisting Council to fulfil its governance and oversight responsibilities.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential:
Business finance legal compliance risk management internal audit
Leadership relationshipbuilding and clear communication
Governance financial reporting and local government knowledge
Ethical judgment independence and commitment to the role
Desirable:
Public sector audit committee experience (preferably local government)
Relevant professional qualifications (IIA CPA CA)
Chairperson is also expected to:
Make themselves available as required to attend participate and lead ARIC meetings
Contribute the time needed to review and understand information provided to it
Apply good analytical skills objectivity and judgement to assign actions post discussion of respective report during ARIC meetings
Provide industry insights related to respective report discussed during ARIC meetings
Act in the best interests of the CN
Have the personal courage to raise and deal with tough issues express opinions frankly ask questions that go to the fundamental core of the issue and pursue independent lines of inquiry
Maintain effective working relationships with CN
Have strong leadership qualities
Lead effective committee meetings
Oversee the CNs internal audit function
Attend and present at annual and strategic assessment meeting with council
Review and approve minutes of meetings of ARIC meetings
Make council aware of emerging risks
