Job Description

Position: Teaching Assistant

Department: Education & Engagement

Reports to: Director of Education & Engagement Department Program Managers

Classification: Parttime NonExempt

Salary/Hour: $19.97/hr

Position Summary:

The Teaching Assistant serves as instructional class support for students ages 3.5 18 within a wide variety of arts and applied theatre programming that SCT provides including workshops and residencies in schools and community centers as well as classes and camps at the theatre. The Teaching Assistant receives specific program assignments on a rolling basis through our Drama School Engagement and School programs dependent on expertise demand availability and program schedule. As SCTs Education & Engagement Department expands its reach we are particularly interested in Teaching Assistants with bilingual and/or multilingual skills who can support curriculum for students from nonEnglish speaking homes and backgrounds.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists in providing culturally responsive instruction for students
  • Collaborates with Teaching Artists to provide professional teaching artistry for all assigned classes camps workshops and/or residencies
  • Utilizes positive classroom management techniques for all students
  • Aids in the development writing evaluation and implementation of curriculum on behalf of SCT Programs
  • Assists in the preparation of the classroom and materials prior to the start of class or workshops
  • Occasionally leads class
  • Collaborates and communicates with other teaching artists and educators
  • Communicates and builds a relationship of trust with students guardians staff teachers and stakeholders
  • Helps maintain accurate records as required including attendance and student medical and emergency information
  • Represents education programs at SCT and in the larger community
  • Attends professional development opportunities
  • Attends faculty and orientation meetings
  • Collaborates with program manager(s)
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree or a minimum of one year of work experience in related field.
  • Dedication to theatre education and/or theatre for young audiences.
  • Commitment to social justice work and interest in public health.
  • Familiarity with using Microsoft Outlook Teams Word and Zoom.
  • Strong communication organizational time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage and direct multiple tasks concurrently and provide follow through.
  • Highly organized strong attention to detail.
  • Growth mindset encourages and responds to feedback around instruction.
  • Customer service with special attention on patience with young people
  • Must be an independent thinker and doer while being a collaborative and effective team player.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

The physical demands described here are representative of those an individual must meet in order to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. We will make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.
  • Studio and classroom spaces are accessed via stairways; Elevators are available.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Preemployment clearances/background checks will be conducted and reevaluated every 3rd year of employment.

Salary & Schedule:

This is a parttime/seasonal nonexempt position. The pay range is $19.97 19.97 per hour. Hours vary and are dependent on programming calendar/demand. Programs are scheduled Monday Saturday typically between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm; some evening hours dependent on program/event schedule.

SCT Compensation Policy To strengthen structural pay equity SCT practices negotiationfree salary processes with all current and potential staff members. Positions are graded in accordance with the scope and range of Essential Duties Responsibilities and Qualifications listed in the job description. Salary range for grade levels are determined by market via 3rd party compensation study.

Benefits:

  • Parttime employees are eligible for prorated accruals of paid vacation after two years service. Employees averaging 20 hours or more per week during the previous 12month period accrue VacationTime at the rate of 0.0193/worked hour. PartTime employees averaging 20 hours or more per week during the previous 12month period accrue VacationTime at the rate of 0.0193/worked hour. PartTime employees averaging 20 hours or more per week during the previous 12month period accrue VacationTime at the rate of 0.0288/worked hour after 60 months of service.
  • Parttime employees are eligible for prorated holiday pay if the employee works the week that the holiday falls.
  • Parttime employees accrue PSST based on the City of Seattle Paid Sick and Safe Time ordinance and may use and carry over 52 hours if PSST per fiscal year.
  • Seattle Childrens Theatre offers employees the option of purchasing an array of additional insurance coverage through AFLAC.
  • Employees are eligible for holiday pay if the employee works the week that the holiday falls.
  • Seattle Childrens Theatre offers employees the opportunity to participate in 403(b) plan in order to save a portion of their earnings on a pretax basis.
  • SCT offers discount parking through Seattle Center.
  • SCT offers discounted public transportation enrollment through ORCA Passport.
