Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an experienced Consumer and/or Family Support and Involvement Coordinator (Mental Health and Substance Use) to join the Segal Psychiatric Inpatient Unit and Psychiatric Assessment Unit teams at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver BC. As a Mental Health and Substance Use Coordinator at Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Plan and support the engagement of patient/clients and/or family members supports staff and leaders to provide client and/or familycentred care and provide direct care to family members who are seeking system navigation and support.

  • Develop and implement a range of engagement strategies and identify potential for engagement initiatives.

  • Participate in planning offers educational skill enhancement and develops effective network relationships to increase the capacity of all stakeholders to support patient/client and/or family engagement initiatives.

About the Services at Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre Mental Health & Substance Use Inpatient Units

The Segal Psychiatric Inpatient Units are located on Levels 5 to 8 in the Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre at Vancouver General Hospital. Psychiatric inpatient services provide assessment and treatment to adults who require acute 24hour management in a hospital setting. There are 75 beds focused on clients who require longerterm intensive treatment to return to their community. The length of stay is approximately five to 12 days.

The Segal Psychiatric Inpatient Units include:

  • Brief Intervention Unit Segal 5th floor
  • Mood Disorders Segal 6th floor
  • Inpatient Psychiatry Segal 7th floor
  • Inpatient Psychiatry & Concurrent Disorders Segal 8th floor

About the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at VGH

The Psychiatric Assessment Unit at Vancouver General Hospital is a 14bed short stay unit focused on clients who require short term intensive treatment to return to their community with length of stay being approximately three days. At PAU Nurses support patients with their physical and mental health needs as well as daytoday activities. The PAU team endeavors to provide a safe place that promotes acute psychiatric stabilization for patients in a comforting caring and holistic environment.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Masters Degree in a Behavioural Health Discipline from a recognized program.
  • Two 2 years recent related experience working with patients/clients and/or their families facilitating client and family engagement processes and initiatives or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • Valid B.C. Drivers License required. Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle for which mileage reimbursement will be paid.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with diverse populations and stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge and experience in community engagement development and facilitation.
  • Demonstrated ability in change management and change processes including conflict management.
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance use community resources and other community service providers.
  • Demonstrated supportive counselling skills.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders and their interaction.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a variety of theoretical models to practice in assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
  • Broad knowledge of legislation government policies and procedures that relate to the client.
  • Broad knowledge of biopsychosocial issues that may occur in response to changing mental health and substance use.
  • Basic knowledge of other health disciplines and their role in health care.
  • Demonstrated listening and informationseeking skills to promote communication and leading to a cooperative approach to problem solving within a multi/interdisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with patients/clients and their families physicians colleagues other community and health care providers both oneonone and in groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community partners and patients/clients with diverse backgrounds.
  • Sound knowledge of the broad determinants of health.
  • Sound knowledge of participatory communitybased planning evaluation outcome evaluation policy development and analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated community engagement and facilitation skills.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengthsbased care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system as well as applicable word processing spreadsheet and database software applications.
  • Ability to organize/prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy all health care workers working in publiclyfunded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
