Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director of Health Design and Construction the Director of Architecture and Planning is responsible for planning and/or procuring the planning and architectural design services for Health capital and noncapital projects. This position will have oversight for directing managing budgeting recruitment and training for the Architectural Division.

The Architectural Division is responsible for providing facility planning support code analysis and maintenance of UCSF Health design standards. The department acts as Architect of Record and provides design support on approximately 200 projects with dollar value up to $250000 on an annual basis with 1020 in queue at any given time across six major sites and various leasehold locations within the Bay Area. The Architectural Division also maintains master agreements with mechanical electrical plumbing and structural engineering services to act as Record Engineers on smallvalue projects.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as the Deputy Campus Architect for Health projects.
  • Interface with applicable Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ); UCSF Building Official within Building Permit Services office and California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) etc.
  • Oversee UCSF Healths project submissions through the appropriate AHJ.
  • Provide support with strategic initiatives and individual Health projects.
  • Support capital improvement projects designed by external design services.
  • Collaborate with Health facilities team to prepare for and participate in required regular facility surveys including but not limited to The Joint Commission (TJC) Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and other regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in Safety Environment of Care and Fire Life Safety meetings.
  • Oversee University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and UCSF Health design standards.
  • Collaborate with Campus Real Estate on interior and signage standards.
  • Oversee signage program including maintenance enforcement of standards and improvements to signage and wayfinding standards.
  • Maintain UCSF Division 1 specifications along with mechanical electrical and plumbing standards in collaboration with Health facilities
  • Maintain Building Information Modeling (BIM) standards required for net new buildings and projects of a certain size.
  • Participate in various UC Office of the President (UCOP) initiatives managed through Real Estatefocused committees including Seismic Compliance ADA and Sustainability efforts.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

The salary range for this position is $144200 $350000 annually. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. An experienced candidate can generally expect to earn between $225000 and $265000.

  • Current California registration as an Architect Engineer or Construction Manager
  • 10 years of experience managing a high volume of development large scale architectural projects including 6 years in healthcare architecture in the State of California
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Excellent skills in strategy development systems planning and change management
  • 10 years of experience in written verbal and interpersonal communication skills including skill to work effectively with multiple constituencies to advance organizational objectives.
  • Advanced organizational and analytical skills to meet prescribed deadlines with time and
  • budget constraints
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in construction management supervision inspection code
  • compliance and plan check
  • Advanced knowledge of institutional construction environments including infrastructure and applicable rules regulations laws policies and practices
  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills including effective negotiation skills and well developed political acumen


    • Masters degree preferred
    • Excellent team building and facilitation skills
    • Expert knowledge of the organization including its vision mission goals achievements and short and longrange strategic plans including capital projects planning and development


    • License to practice in architecture or engineering
    • Current California registration as an Architect Engineer or Construction Manager

    The Routine Capital Construction Department is responsible for delivering the design and construction for routine noncapital and capital projects within all of our existing owned and leased facilities. Typical project budgets are under $70 million. Our Major Capital Construction Department is responsible for delivery of net new buildings or major tenant improvement projects with a dollar value that exceeds $70 million.

    The combined UCSF Campus and Health organizations include approximately 198 UCSF and 38 contract personnel; operating/recharge budgets of more than $52.2M per year; current year capital project expenditures of $900M; and oversight and responsibility for > $13.3B longrange capital development.
