Position Title: Executive Director
for Center of Excellence for Regenerative Native Agriculture (CERNA)

Scheduled Hours: Monday Friday 8:00am 4:30pm (hours may vary depending on need)

Reports To: Tribal Administrator

Wage Scale: $62000 $90000 (depending on qualifications and experience)

Overview:

The Executive Director of Center of Excellence for Regenerative Native Agriculture (CERNA) is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the development implementation and promotion of programs that educate and support Native American farmers in adopting regenerative agricultural practices leveraging traditional indigenous knowledge while integrating modern techniques to improve soil health water conservation and climate resilience across tribal lands; essentially acting as the driving force behind a hub of knowledge sharing and technical assistance within the field of regenerative agriculture specifically tailored to Native American communities. Responsible for the overall leadership management and operations of the center. The Executive Director will develop and implement CERNAs strategic plan manage its budget and build and manage its team. In addition the Executive Director will oversee all CERNA activities and work closely with project partners to ensure successful completion of all activities described in the CERNA grant with the USDAs Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities grant program. The Executive Director will represent CERNA to the public and to other organizations while representing the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive vision of CERNA aligning with current research on regenerative agriculture and the unique needs of Native American Farmers.
  • Establish partnerships with tribal organizations universities agriculture agencies and private sector stakeholders to foster collaboration and resource sharing.
  • Secure funding from grants foundations and other sources to support CERNAs operations and program development.
  • Design and delivery educational workshops training programs and field demonstrations focused on regenerative farming techniques relevant to diverse tribal ecosystems.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer by integrating traditional indigenous agricultural practices with modern regenerative farming methods.
  • Develop curriculum and materials that are culturally sensitive and accessible to Native American farmers.
  • Provide onfarm consultations to Native American farmers offering technical expertise on soil health assessment crop rotation grazing management and water conservation.
  • Identify and address challenges faced by Native American farmers in adopting regenerative practices including access to markets and financial support.
  • Foster network of peertopeer learning among Native American farmers.
  • Collaborate with researchers to conduct field trials and demonstration projects exploring the application of regenerative agriculture in different tribal regions.
  • Identify and promote climatesmart agricultural practices that align with indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications conferences and workshops.
  • Represent and Center at policy discussion related to regenerative agriculture and Native American food sovereignty.
  • Advocate for policies and funding opportunities that support Native American farmers transitioning to regenerative practices.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Supervisory duties within the CERNA department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Office computer computer scanner associated software general office equipment (copier fax machine phone system etc. mobile data system department owned vehicles and all other equipment as required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of regenerative agriculture principles and practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of indigenous agricultural practices and cultural sensitivity.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing complex projects and building partnerships.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical problemsolving abilities to address challenges faced by Native American farmers.
  • Background in agriculture environmental science or related field with commitment to promoting sustainable land management.
  • Masters degree in agriculture environmental science or related field.
  • 10 years or more of in a leadership role in agriculture environment or nonprofit sectors with supervisory and management experience required.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and accurately in both written and verbal communication skills. Ability to express ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Must have ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of clear accurate and comprehensive recommendations and reports.
  • Organizational skills and ability to provide cooperative performance of goals and objectives.
