Position Summary:
Cytotechnologists perform microscopic screening of gynecologic nongynecologic and fine needle aspirate (FNA) slide preparations for the detection of precancerous and cancerous conditions. The cytotechnologist assists with collection and provides adequacy assessments for biopsy procedures.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:

- Respond to inquiries from customers regarding all aspects of laboratory services including but not limited to specimen requirements turnaround times and reporting protocols.
- Prioritize and organize cytology specimens to facilitate efficient workflow.
- Stock supplies on a regular basis ensuring all needed materials are available.
- Complete basic laboratory ordering testing and reporting operations.
- Recognize problem areas and take appropriate corrective action or notify appropriate leadership personnel.
- Perform daily temperature and function checks for assigned areas. Document all checks appropriately and take appropriate corrective action if any are outside acceptable limits.
- Use personal protective equipment in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies.
- Screen and enter results for gynecologic nongynecologic and fine needle aspiration slides.
- Assist with collection and provide rapid assessments for fine needle aspirations including EBUS procedures core biopsies with touch preparations renal biopsies and preparation of bone marrow biopsies.
- Process various specimen types including but not limited to body fluids pap smears cell blocks and FNA specimens.
- Monitor and track daily screening workload.
- Adjust and maintain microscopes.
- Perform QC slide screening and documentation.
- Follow CAP or other regulatory body requirements in the completion of duties and assignments
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Level of Education
- Minimum: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an accredited cytotechnologist program
Level of Experience
- Minimum: Three 3 years previous laboratory experience working as a cytotechnologist
- Preferred: Five 5 years or more working as a cytotechnologist
