How to be Successful in this Role:
We are looking for two experienced deputy prosecutors with significant expertise in tort litigation. These positions are responsible for high level work in the legal field as assistant to the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney acting as a legal representative of Pierce County. In addition to performing all the duties as set forth for a County Attorney 1 2 and 3 the employee may be called upon to assist the prosecutor in formulating policy for the office setting goals for the office and assisting in the selection of the best personnel to fulfill those goals. An attorney in this classification exercises independent judgement initiative and resourcefulness in adapting laws policies and precedents to complex situations or to advise regarding a proper course of action. The employee will have demonstrated exceptional qualities in mentoring and motivating staff to assist individual employees in realizing their fullest potential with a view to accomplishing the Prosecutors role in serving the community and focusing individuals on how we best serve the public. Duties are performed with professional discretion and within office guidelines professional ethics and standards and legal requirements.

The ability to handle high volume caseload work under pressure with tight timelines is essential and the ability to collaborate with clients and colleagues in a collaborative work environment.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

Handles complex legal matters and litigation on behalf of Pierce County both in State and Federal Courts. Initially involved at the claim stage the attorney will remain involved through pretrial preparation trial and any appeals taken therefrom.
Works directly with elected officials and appointed department heads to provide legal advice and the drafting and preparing legal opinions and memoranda.
May be called upon to perform the duties and functions of either the Chief or Assistant Chief Civil Deputy in the event of the absence of one or the other or both.
Frequently relied upon by other attorneys within the office for both legal and strategic advice.
May assist the prosecutor in formulating policy for the office.
May assist the prosecutor in setting goals for the office and in recommending the best personnel to fulfill those goals.
Analyzes appraises organizes facts evidence and precedents derived from case law; makes presentations before courts legislative bodies and administrative agencies.
Supervises motivates and manages personnel. Promotes teamwork and acts as a positive role model.

COUNTY ATTORNEY 3
An employee in this classification involves complex legal work involving civil tort litigation as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Civil Division. In addition to performing all of the duties required of a County Attorney 1 and 2 the employee will serve as lead attorney on more complex civil cases. The employee may also act in a supervisory role. Duties are to be performed with professional discretion within office guidelines professional ethics standards and legal requirements.

COUNTY ATTORNEY 4
This classification is distinguished from the County Attorney 3 classification by being predominately assigned to the most complex civil tort cases. This classification may also have supervisory responsibility for a unit in the departments Civil Division and may be requested to assist in formulating policy for the department and providing recommendations on personnel issues.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSCOUNTY ATTORNEY 3 or 4:

Must be admitted as an attorney in the State of Washington (RCW 36.27.010 and a U.S. Citizen (RCW 36.27.010 RCW 36.27.040 and RCW 29 with 35 years practicing law.

Preferred Requirements:
Experience in civil torts litigation.
