Under general supervision Cadets perform various duties including but not limited to: answering phones; typing correspondence; assisting the public at the front counter; receiving requests for service and information; data entry and searching on various computer systems; writing reports; filing; enforcing parking ordinances and vehicle codes; and performing other related duties as required. This position requires the ability to work all shifts depending on assignment including days nights graveyards weekends and holidays. Police Cadets report directly to the onduty Watch Commander.
Example of Duties
The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. This position involves both station clerical work and field work.
Station duties may include but are not limited to:
Receiving reports and requests for service from the public over the telephone and at the Departments front counter;
Completing necessary forms concerning requests for service;
Searching files for information and records on arrested persons and suspects;
Indexing case reports;
Operating various computer systems and standard office equipment;
Providing information concerning cases and prior records to qualified persons;
Assisting with compiling and tabulating statistical data; performing clerical work as required; maintaining files and index card systems;
Providing information regarding standard Police Department matters to the public at the front counter and on the telephone;
Providing receipts for and keeping detailed ledgers of monies collected;
Performing other related duties as required.
Field duties may include but are not limited to:
Enforcing parking ordinances and vehicle codes;
Including those related to the storage and impoundment of vehicles;
Moving police department vehicles;
Assisting with fleet maintenance (e.g. driving vehicles to dealerships);
Picking up supplies as needed for activities and performing other related duties as required.
Education/Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Enrollment in a community college or university level in Criminal Justice courses with the goal of a law enforcement career is highly desirable.
Special RequirementsKnowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of office equipment operation. Ability to deal effectively with the public in nonemergency and emergency situations; learn pertinent local state federal and other laws City Personnel Rules and Regulations and Department policies; communicate pleasantly and effectively; learn and develop skill in interviewing techniques. Possess basic computer operations and data entry skills. Maintain a neat personal appearance. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Possess a teamoriented philosophy.
Working Conditions
Frequently required to walk sit talk or hear. Environment may include exposure to conditions such as dust fumes odors or noise. Computer terminal is used on a daily basis.
Physical Demands
Candidates must possess the ability to: sit or stand for extended periods of time; climb at least five flights of stairs unassisted; coordinate eyes hands and fingers in typing; exert light to heavy physical effort; and exert sufficient force to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
