Required Experience & Competency

  • We are hiring an Animal Care Supervisor! This is a Civil Service position responsible for the care of a variety of laboratory animals in accordance with applicable safety, sanitation, and research requirements, and the supervision of personnel, facilities, and equipment needed to carry out these work requirements.

Education

  • Bachelor s degree and 2 years related lab animal experience, or combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 6 years

Preferred Qualifications

  • ALAT or higher certification through AALAS
  • Supervisory experience in lab animal industry
  • Hands-on experience working with multiple lab animal species
  • Understanding of cagewash and vivarium sanitation operations
Selection Criteria

  • Supervisory experience hire new employees and manage employee performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions in English. Able to read detailed laboratory instructions in English to complete work. Demonstrated writing skills.
  • Good conflict management skills and organization and planning skills.
  • Valid driver s license.
  • Must be able to lift/push up to 50 lbs of equipment and sanitizing agents.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • 30% - Employee Supervision
    • Supervise and direct the work of laboratory attendants (LA), laboratory animal attendants (LAA), and laboratory animal care technicians (LACT)
    • Plan training/cross-training of staff to ensure standard, consistent operations across all RAR animal facilities
    • Ensure staff implement proper and consistent husbandry care for all species & areas within RAR
    • Create and maintain work schedules (including weekend/holidays) and work with team to cover work during employee absences
    • Provide performance feedback, both immediate and at annual performance reviews
    • Mentor employees to further career goals and support continued educational and certification opportunities
    • Ensure direct reports have the resources and support needed to be effective
    • Share weekend and on call responsibilities as needed
  • 30% - Equipment and Facilities
    • Work with RAR management to understand acute and long-term facility and equipment needs
    • Ensure staff have the appropriate knowledge and training to ensure proper maintenance and alerting Facilities Maintenance team as appropriate
    • Develop and maintain a system for understanding and monitoring facility utilization, including forecasts and investigator requests, while ensuring that census activities and cage card management are conducted as timely and efficiently as possible
  • 15% - Animal Care
    • Onboard new staff ensuring proper training with the Training Coordinator and ROHP requirements have been completed
    • Assign tasks in cleaning and disinfecting rooms and hallways, husbandry tasks including feeding and watering of animals
    • Report animal welfare concerns to Area Veterinarian
  • 10% - Procedures and Protocols
    • Writes, reviews, and edits standard operating procedures to be current with AALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care)
    • Monitor and maintain standards in vivarium and address any identified noncompliance or deficiencies with RAR management
  • 10% - Provide Information
    • Collaborate with investigators by responding to written and verbal requests
    • Writes, reviews, and updates SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
    • Provide coaching, training, and mentoring of RAR staff
  • 5% - Teamwork
    • Providing coaching, training and mentoring to staff
Additionally
  • Works with laboratory animals cleaning, feeding, monitoring.
  • This position s responsibilities include assignment to on-call status, to conduct after-hours
  • monitoring and emergency response when needed outside of typical business hours.

This position will be responsible for supervising and directing the activities of approximately half of the department's 10 animal care supervisors in collaboration with a second Animal Care Manager. Together, the Animal Care Managers and Supervisors oversee a team of nearly 100 people responsible for the care of laboratory animals. This management role is intended to provide another level of support to the supervisors and staff in the department, ensuring all safety, sanitation, and research requirements are followed and that the needed resources (human, facilities, and equipment) are available. The manager will also be asked to lead and oversee various husbandry-related projects. The work duties for this position are complex and varied and will require the interpretation of technical and detailed guidelines, policies, and procedures. Analytical ability is needed to gather and interpret data and information to aid in making decisions regarding refining methods, processes, and techniques used to maintain high quality animal care and customer service. Innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving are an essential underlying part of the job duties described within this posting. Also, a balanced commitment to the employees, animals and management must be maintained. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Operations. Education BA/BS degree plus at least 5 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 9 years Direct managerial experience of employees, >2 year in duration
