Max INC Rate: $100.11/
Max T4 Rate: $82.74/

General Description

The E4 Engineer is a professional engineer or geoscientist who applies engineering knowledge to provide engineering estimating planning and quality management services for medium complexity projects and/or operations safely with quality within budget and on time.

Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • A minimum eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing designs analyzing and resolving problems and interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity and scope assignments for BC Hydro projects and operations.
  • Assist project or operations management to meet safety cost quality and time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs recommending payment for work completed by contractors preparing progress reports coordinating work schedules and other similar tasks.
  • Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion at BC Hydro.
  • Participate in BC Hydros engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis contributing to the development of technical standards exercising judgment in selecting and interpreting information recommending safe engineering designs and making decisions related to methods and designs as well as providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability at BC Hydro.

Important Notes

  • Prior to commencement on assignment the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner or the use of their firms Permit to Practice with EGBC.
  • EGBC Registrants provided to BC Hydro through this assignment shall work under BC Hydros Professional Practice Management Plan Quality Management Pillar.
  • The Registrant shall apply their own or their firms Permit to Practice Number to work that is Sealed by the Registrant.
  • Retention and preservation of all project documentation produced by the Registrant during their contract with BC Hydro will be retained by BC Hydro to satisfy EGBC Bylaws.

Education and Skills

  • Registered Professional Engineer (.) or Professional Geoscientist (.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or with another jurisdiction and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC.
  • BC Hydro uses a Digital Sign and Seal Technology. You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius.
  • Intermediate English skills for professional environment written and spoken.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.
  • Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software.
  • Intermediate MS Office skills (Word Excel and PowerPoint).

Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • All the required Experience and Role Accountabilities shall relate to AutoCAD Inventor Microstation and Solidworks drafting work experience.
  • Support the creation and revision of engineering drawings used in the creation of Distribution Engineering Standards.
  • These Standards are used by a variety of internal and external stakeholders for design and construction of the Overhead - and Underground Distribution System.
  • Use a variety of computer-aided drafting (CAD) applications to depict work in two and three dimensions drawings.
  • Liaise and work with Distribution Standards Engineers for accurate creation/revision of graphical representation of Distribution equipment and structures (Overhead - and Underground).
  • Create Standards pages for review and acceptance by Standards Engineering.
  • Create and update Metering One-Line drawings for large customer revenue metering projects.
  • Prepare drafting work for tendering to vendors.

Additional Education and Skills

  • Experience doing computer aided Standards drafting for a utility or a similar industry.
  • BC Hydro Distribution experience preferred.
  • Strong background and/or experience in 3D modelling preferred.

Must Haves

  • A bachelors degree in electrical engineering from a recognized or accredited university. Candidates with degrees in other engineering disciplines may be considered where substantial relevant experience can be demonstrated.
  • Relevant engineering experience. Typically 8 years for Senior Engineer roles.
  • Demonstrate experience in overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages up to 35 kV.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills allowing you to clearly explain technical options present solutions to diverse audiences and tailor your approach to different levels of understanding.
  • Exhibit proven leadership teamwork relationship management and interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Apply practical knowledge and sound judgment to effectively analyze and resolve issues.

Relevant experience in any of the following team specific areas is an asset:

  • Systems Automation and Protection Experience with distribution automation medium voltage electrical equipment protection and control systems SCADA relaying or related technologies.
  • Customer Electrical Services Experience with customer connection standards metering service entrance requirements or the interface between utility and customer-owned electrical systems.
  • Overhead and Underground Standards Experience with distribution equipment lines and standards.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and maintain standards Create revise and update construction design and commissioning standards for BC Hydros Distribution System within your teams area of expertise.
  • Equipment evaluation and approval Plan and conduct field trials assess new equipment and technologies and collaborate with field crews and vendors to approve equipment for system-wide use.
  • Provide technical expertise Serve as a subject matter resource to Distribution Engineering Distribution Design Asset Planning and Operations teams offering guidance on standards interpretation equipment application and complex technical issues within your teams specialty.
  • Investigate and resolve engineering challenges Analyze and resolve a range of complex and unique engineering problems including failure investigations and safety-related assessments.
  • Stakeholder engagement Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to build consensus encourage innovation and develop engineering solutions that prioritize safety environmental protection cost-effectiveness and the needs of employees and the public.
  • Support modernization initiatives Contribute to the advancement of standards development processes including adoption of modern engineering design tools and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Build professional relationships Cultivate strong relationships with colleagues clients and cross-functional teams to set priorities evaluate work impacts and address concerns.
  • Work with independence Operate within broad objectives and guidelines exercising sound engineering judgment and consulting your manager on critical or high-impact projects.
