About the role
As an Engineer in AEMOs System Planning team you will apply your technical expertise to assess power system capability and develop solutions that support current and future stakeholder needs. You will analyse system performance generate insights and provide advice to senior engineers management and external stakeholders.
AEMOs System Planning function focuses on the efficient medium- to long-term planning of the power system to ensure security and reliability across the National Electricity Market (NEM). The team delivers critical work including the Integrated System Plan (ISP the 20-year blueprint for the east coast power system alongside key system security assessments such as System Strength and Inertia Reports. Our analysis informs major infrastructure investment decisions and supports industry and government stakeholders in shaping the future energy system.
In this role you will apply strong engineering judgement and power system fundamentals to navigate the complexity and uncertainty of the energy transition. Your work will span detailed technical analysis high-level problem-solving and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. This is a critical role in engineering a secure reliable and efficient future power system with high renewable energy integration.
What you will be doing
- Provide expert engineering analysis and advice to support AEMOs power system planning applying sound judgement to navigate uncertainty limited information and diverse stakeholder needs.
- Deliver technical support on electricity planning and system performance to ensure safe secure and reliable operation of the power system.
- Contribute to key planning publications including the Integrated System Plan (ISP) Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO) and system security reports.
- Prepare clear high-quality reports and insights on network capability system performance and planning issues for management and project teams.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver strategic planning outcomes while supporting continuous improvement of processes and fostering a positive team culture aligned with AEMO values.
What you will bring to the role
- Tertiary qualification in relevant disciplines (mathematics operations research engineering physics etc) and ideally relevant industry experience.
- Experience using power system analysis tools (e.g. PSSE PowerFactory PSCAD) including load flow and fault level studies supported by sound knowledge of power system operation and design.
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis modelling and automation of engineering or simulation tasks.
- Strong analytical and technical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel Word) and some programming or data analysis capability.
- Highly organised and self-motivated with the ability to manage competing priorities contribute to team outcomes and demonstrate behaviours aligned to AEMOs values and culture.
