Job Summary

SUMMARY

BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGEWelding Instructors are responsible for providing training to students in a manner that prepares successful program graduates for employment as welders filling positions within various industries including shipbuilding industrial construction energy fields sheet metal and auto body; or provides continuing education for persons previously or currently employed in these professions.

BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGEmaintains a vacancy pool of qualified faculty interested in temporary teaching positions. Adjunct (part-time) faculty are responsible for preparing and providing instruction for students in the classroom. This part-time position may become available at any time and is typically filled on a quarterly basis.

Salary reflects July 1 2025 through June 30 2026 academic year


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & OTHER DUTIES

Essential Functions

  • Use effective classroom and laboratory instructional practices to prepare students for current welding industry standards.
  • Apply appropriate media support to conduct classroom lectures/virtual course work and laboratory projects to prepare students with skills required for entry-level welding employment.
  • Mentor encourage counsel and guide students towards the completion of program requirements while promoting and modeling effective employment competencies including interpersonal communication and responsible work habits.
  • Respond to student input concerns or challenges in a timely manner in accordance with college procedures.
  • Manage a blended classroom environment with both high school age and adult learners.
  • Monitor student progress to support retention and program completion referring students to available support services as necessary.
  • Maintain an effective safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times students are knowledgeable of safety techniques and personal protective equipment and that all equipment and machines are in safe working order.
  • In coordination with other faculty and dean monitor equipment supplies and consumable needs using appropriate planning to make timely requests for replacements and repairs
  • Evaluate and document students competency attainment course progress attendance work-based learning experiences and workplace behaviors at least quarterly and in accordance with college policy and/or procedures.
  • Maintain records of all shop job instructional projects.
  • Develop and maintain full program curriculum documentation in accordance with the approved college format and ensure that instruction is consistent with current industry or business standards technologies procedures equipment and materials
  • Annually validate and review course competencies and skills required for industry entry level employment in the industry or profession and adapt curriculum to match those skills when needed
  • Coordinate with other instructors support services staff and advisory committee members to ensure a cohesive learning environment dedicated to providing industry with qualified entry level employees
  • Identify develop and maintain an advisory committee appropriate to the specific area of Instruction
  • Maintain friendly and cooperative relationships with respective industry partners
  • Participate actively and collaboratively in student recruitment
  • Develop and/or maintain industry-based program accreditation and ensure students are prepared for and can obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications.
  • Deliver classroom management to maintain a suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct/problems and aid in solving them in accordance with college procedures.

Non-Essential/Other Functions

  • Represent Bates Technical High School in a variety of outreach or informational session activities.
  • Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements.
  • Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention completionand progression.
  • Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support access to employment opportunities for students and maintain student job placement records.
  • Accountable for keeping personal development up to date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses professional development committees etc.
  • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment college councils etc.

QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of work experience in the welding industry.
  • Must obtain a Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO Welding) certification within the first year of employment.
  • Hold (or obtain within 6 months of hire) Current American Welding Society (AWS) standing as a Certified Welding Educator (CWE) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).

Allowable Substitution

If necessary alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year welding program at a technical or community college.
  • One-year supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with persons of disability and/or learning-disabled persons.
  • Prior teaching in vocational setting.
  • Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO Welding) certification.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification.
Conditions of Employment
  • Once an offer of employment is made a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not preclude employment but will be contingent in determining the employees suitability and competence to continue to perform in the position.
  • This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
  • Following date of hire must obtain a Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days.
  • Maintain current CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License and reliable vehicle for reimbursable travel.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of welding and related competencies.
  • Knowledge of welding with Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW); Gas Metal Arc (GMAW); Flux Core Arc (FCAW); Gas Tungston Arc (GTAW); Aluminum Mig (AMW); Oxy acetylene Welding and Cutting and Blueprint Reading.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse internal and external audiences through college approved communication; must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide professional high-quality courteous and responsive customer service with internal and external audiences of the College.
  • Model professional decorum discretion and mutual respect within and outside of the college.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance on the job to best support business needs of the department and college.
  • Consistently maintain confidentiality and sensitivity with internal and external audiences.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and goals of the institution and community and technical college system; stay abreast of trends and regulations to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the mission values goals and objectives of Bates Technical College.
  • Ability to communicate understand instructions and recognize hazardous unsafe or poisonous materials and/or products.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to acknowledge and respect individuals values and opinions to foster a harmonious working relationship with colleagues and/or students.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional demeanor while recognizing and acting appropriately in order not to jeopardize the physical and mental stability and safety of colleagues and/or students.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in shop and classroom environments. Frequent exposure to temperature change loud noise hazardous materials and dangerous equipment is common.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Work is active in nature.
  • Work requires long periods of standing and sitting.
  • Occasionally kneeling stooping crouching crawling and climbing.
  • Move up to 25 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Visual focus and strain.
  • Requires visual concentration on details.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions with finger manipulation .
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to feel handle or operate objects tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Manual dexterity and precision required.
  • Work directly with students/clients.
  • Work involves constant interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone in person or electronically.

  • Occasionally required to deal with distraught people.
  • Operates and controls movement of power tools and/or large mechanized powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Occasional/Frequent exposure to fumes dust and/or odors.
  • Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards.
