Description of Work

The NC State Highway Patrol is seeking an enthusiastic team member to join our team as Radio Programming Engineer.

The Radio Programming Engineer serves within the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Technical Services Unit Radio Shop and is responsible for the programming deployment maintenance troubleshooting and support of mission-critical land mobile radio (LMR) communications systems and related equipment. This position serves as the primary resource for the development and maintenance of radio programming templates (code plugs) utilized by the State Highway Patrol and partner public safety agencies operating on the VIPER network and other local 700/800 MHz trunked radio systems.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop maintain and deploy radio programming templates (code plugs) for VIPER and other public safety radio systems.
  • Program configure test and support mobile portable and fixed radio communications equipment.
  • Install maintain troubleshoot and repair communications equipment and related infrastructure.
  • Serve as a technical resource for radio programming interoperability and communications-related initiatives.
  • Coordinate with local state and federal agencies to support communications interoperability and operational requirements.
  • Assist with communications equipment inventory management asset tracking and lifecycle planning.
  • Evaluate operational needs and assist in the development of technical solutions specifications and cost estimates.
  • Support emergency communications operations and statewide deployment activities as required.

Management Prefers:

  • Working experience in solving complex network issues involving voice and IT environments.
  • Excellent working knowledge of voice and network principles security administration processes and frameworks metrics collections and reporting.
  • Technical knowledge and experience with assessing/auditing security of networks desired.
  • Hands-on experience with voice platforms.
  • Working experience with multiple telco voice providers systems and vendors.
  • Experience designing building managing and maintaining enterprise-level mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Experience in the radio and communication area and extensive knowledge/understanding of two-way radio theory and communications systems.
  • Experience with P25 Products from Motorola Solutions is highly desirable
  • The ability to program troubleshoot and perform system diagnostics on complex radio systems.
  • Experience in installation diagnostics repair maintenance program wireless communication equipment such as 2-way radios transmitters receivers and antennas.
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License FCIA NABER or equivalent industry certification.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Typical work schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm
  • Must work a weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
  • Must be available to work after hours and weekend when necessary.
  • Must be available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes when scheduled.
  • Employee is considered Essential/Mandatory Staff and required to work on adverse weather days during emergencies and may be called to work special events.
  • Must have a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in computer science or an IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

Associate degree in computer science or a related technical field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience;

OR

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of networking related experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
