About Us

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the states public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

Description of Work

This role provides professional services and technical assistance to Local Education Agencies (LEAs) State Operated Programs Non-Public Schools and the Exceptional Children (EC) Division particularly during monitoring and improvement processes.

Job Responsibilities:

Provide technical assistance and professional support to Local Education Agencies (LEAs) State Operated Programs Non-Public Schools and the Exceptional Children (EC) Division.

Support and guide LEAs through monitoring processes.

Stay current on and communicate state and federal special education laws regulations and emerging trends.

Design and deliver training staff development and technical assistance through on-site visits conferences and virtual methods.

Monitor compliance by reviewing programs analyzing data and ensuring timely correction of non-compliance through verification activities.

Collaborate with educators and multidisciplinary professionals to analyze needs and support effective administration curriculum assessment and instruction for students with special needs.

Ensure timely correction of non-compliance through verification activities such as site visits data analysis and ongoing communication.

Manager Preferences:

Supplemental Information:
The Office of Exceptional Children provides general supervision professional learning and technical assistance to all local education agencies including charter schools state operated programs the innovative school district lab schools and other state agencies and approved private agencies that provide special education to children and youth classified as disabled. Approximately 14% of the students being educated in North Carolina are exceptional. All require specially designed instruction (SDI) to receive the full benefit of their education. Some also require related services like physical occupational or speech therapy; assistive technology; or adapted classroom facilities or equipment. Most receive special education services in regular classroom settings; others receive instruction in resource classes. A small percentage of exceptional students receive educational services in separate classes within regular schools in separate day or residential schools and sometimes in hospitals or in their homes. It is the mission of the Exceptional Children Division to assure that all these students develop academically mentally physically emotionally and vocationally through the provision of an appropriate individualized education in the least restrictive environment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Masters degree in education school administration business administration or public administration from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of responsible administrative experience in an education environment at the local state or federal level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
