Aquaculture Technician
Job Summary
We are looking for a dedicated and motivated individual to join us as an Aquaculture Technician to provide aquaculture technical support for classroom activities field trips and research activities. The main responsibilities involve activities at the aquaculture facility (fish husbandry) and the science laboratory (day-to-day upkeep).
The Aquaculture Technician works closely with the Laboratory team to mantain the equipment of the recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) perform husbandry tasks such as feeding the fish manually washing soiled filters and checking water quality. The role includes laboratory activities such as preparing the classroom (e.g. for fish dissections) washing tools and glassware handling chemicals and general housekeeping. The role is accountable for maintaining the facilities including cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment ensuring stock levels are inventoried received and stored according to standard operating procedures. Weekend and/or public holiday work is expected but will be offset with off-in-lieu (OIL) credited. Typical activities are moderately physical and working conditions will occasionally be wet and humid.
Main Responsibilities
- Upkeep of aquatic specimens and life support systems : Assist the Laboratory Manager in maintaining the fish. Clean and maintain the aquarium facilities. Ensure the smooth running of the water systems and tanks and conduct minor repairs as required.
- Laboratory upkeep : Keep the laboratory clean and organized.
- Provide Laboratory Support (Academics) : Assist Laboratory Manager in providing technical support for classes and workshops.
- Provide Laboratory Support (Research) : Provide technical support for research activities as instructed by Laboratory Manager including but not limited to the preparation of commonly used reagents chemicals and consumables; autoclaving and decontamination.
Person Specifications
- Minimum GCE O or GCE N or Diploma in any field
- Comfortable working with laboratory animals particularly fish.
- Physically fit and capable of performing moderately demanding tasks.
- Role may require work on weekends and/or public holidays. Such arrangement will be compensated with OIL.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrates a diligent organized and methodical approach to work with attention to detail.
- The position requires physical work and exposure to wet and humid environments.
- The internal title for this position is Executive Lab Technician.
