Reports to: Middle and High School Heads

Job Description

The Upper School Learning Specialist will support students with a variety of learning styles by providing intervention and remediation for students both in the classroom and in small group settings. Learning Specialists also support teachers in meeting the range of learning needs of their students within an inclusive classroom. The Upper School Learning Specialist will possess a deep understanding of students with disabilities ,be trained in reading remediation programs, and be prepared to develop, implement, and promote an exceptional program to ensure the growth of IDEAL students in our Zenith and Dylan Programs.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Running and scheduling IDEAL’s Upper School Learning Center, and meeting with individual students and small groups to provide additional support, intervention, and remediation in literacy, executive functioning, and other areas

  • Teaching 1-2 classes per year, including one small, multi-grade class

  • Equipping students with the literacy skills they need to increase independence, confidence, and success in all areas

  • Collaborating with and communicating with classroom teachers, both general educators and learning specialists, to coordinate the individual supports a student is receiving and to ensure that appropriate supports are in place in the classroom

  • Supporting students in the work they are doing within their classrooms, including completing shorter and longer-term assignments

  • Communicating with families regarding students’ growth and challenges

  • Working closely with classroom teachers to support them in differentiation and pedagogy that promotes inclusion, meets student needs, and supports student growth curriculum

  • Collaborating with classroom teachers and learning specialists to support them in the creation and implementation of students’ Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs)

  • Implementing formative and summative assessment to document student progress and achievement; assessing and analyzing student strengths and needs; designing and implementing appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth

  • Participating in CSE meetings when requested and writing and reviewing progress reports for students who visit the Learning Center

  • Remaining current with best practices in pedagogy, literacy, and differentiation and engaging in and leading routine and strategic professional development on topics important to our staff and students

  • Attending and participating in weekly faculty meetings, committee meetings, school functions, and professional development activities Meeting with outside specialists as requested.

Benefits

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in an appropriate field

  • Certification as a special education teacher or learning specialist

  • Experience with reading remediation programs ( Wilson, PAF, Teachers College writing and reading workshops, Orton Gillingham, etc)

  • Knowledge of relevant technology and assistive communication devices

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and executive functioning skills

  • Three years experience in a relevant area preferred

  • Collaborative team player
