YOUTH SERVICES “POPUP” INTERNS

Do you dream of having a career that is different every day Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children teens and families Can you handle silly singalongs messy art and science projects and thinking on your feet The Schaumburg Township District Library is seeking a two (2) Youth Services “PopUp” Interns. The Interns will gain practical handson experience by providing reference and readers’ advisory at youth services desks developing and delivering story times and youth/teen programs creating displays assisting with special projects and more. Additionally the Interns will work with a team of highly experienced hardworking fun and friendly Youth Services professionals. The successful candidate will get not only a crash course in Youth Services Librarianship but mentorship and professional contacts in their chosen field.

Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

  • MondayThursday: 8:30am3:00pm
  • Fridays: 8:30am12:30pm

This position will begin May 28 2024 and will be a 10week internship. The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay is $15.00/hour based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Youth Services PopUp Library Intern is responsible for providing engaging handson experiences in a mobile version of the Library. Beyond bringing resources to the Schaumburg Township District this position also signs patrons up for Library cards provides opportunities to participate in the Summer Challenge program conducts programming and acts as a Library ambassador in the community.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

Public Service

  • Maintain the PopUp Library schedule; communicate with staff at each planned site.
  • Develop and facilitate handsonactivities to use at PopUp Library stops.
  • Develop and conduct weekly story times and STEM programs.
  • Ensure the PopUp Library is stocked each day with a variety of reading materials for all ages and levels appropriate for those day’s locations and had ample supplies for planned activities.
  • Load and unload the van with materials: at each location and at the beginning and ending of each day.
  • Provide Library information and readers’ advisory services to a diverse population.
  • Distribute materials to patrons at each location and record daily circulation statistics.
  • Sign patrons up for the Summer Challenge and Library cards.
  • Compile statistics for daily weekly and monthly totals. Submit an end of summer narrative report.
  • Conduct patron surveys on their PopUp Library experience and submit a report on findings with suggestions for improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and staff at various site locations i.e. apartment complexes schools park districts etc.
  • Assist in maintaining collections assuring that materials are in good condition and if not are repaired or replaced.
  • Work with all age groups effectively.

  • Be a Library Ambassador with the patrons out in the community and with our coworkers.
  • Maintain the flexibility and willingness to work in a dynamic busy and changing environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelors degree (BA) from a fouryear college or university is required.
  • Currently enrolled in a Masters in Library Science candidate or similar MA program preferred.
  • Working knowledge or word processing spreadsheet and database applications is required.
  • Ability to use workplace technology including email internet systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to learn various job functions perform them correctly and understand the necessity in overall library operations.
