Work Schedule Hours per week: Varies depending on department needs 40 hours per week

Starting Salary Range: $85072.00 - $112373.00 and determined based on relevant years of work experience provided on application and resume.

Position Summary: The Deputy Chief of Police supports JCCC mission by serving as a high-level executive leader within the Police Department providing strategic direction operational oversight and administrative management to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. Reporting directly to the Police Chief this role is responsible for the day-to-day management of departmental functions including the supervision of sworn personnel dispatch operations and administrative staff. The incumbent supports budget maintenance policy development and long-term planning as well as a front-line supervisor capable of performing all duties of a Kansas-commissioned Police Officer. This position requires a delicate balance of firm law enforcement authority and the diplomatic sensitivity needed to work within a diverse multicultural academic community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree and certification as Kansas-commissioned Police Officer.
  • Must qualify and certify with firearms ASP baton CPR AED First Aid and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.
  • Must obtain NIMS and ICS training certificates.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Criminal Justice Public Administration or a related field.
  • Command-level leadership experience in a law enforcement agency preferably within a college or university environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Clery Act Title IX and other higher education regulatory requirements.
  • Proven success in implementing community-oriented policing strategies in diverse environments.
  • Experience leading emergency management operations and serving in an Incident Command role.
  • Familiarity with KLEAP or other accreditation standards.
  • Strong background in strategic planning budgeting and organizational leadership.
  • Experience collaborating with local state and federal law enforcement partners.

Position detailsinclude but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Leadership & Policy Development:
    • Assisting the Police Chief in daily operations and the development of department goals objectives and policies.
    • Serving as the designated Acting Chief of Police when the Chief is absent.
    • Maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) rules regulations and job descriptions.
    • Making decisions regarding budget maintenance goal attainment and equipment recommendations.
    • Identifying best practices and researching innovative law enforcement techniques to improve efficiency.
  • Personnel Management & Workforce Development:
    • Recruiting interviewing and hiring full-time and part-time staff.
    • Providing leadership direction and training to staff; coaching individuals through escalations or issues.
    • Measuring and evaluating performance across the department and implementing disciplinary actions when necessary.
    • Fostering a positive collaborative environment that promotes innovation and teamwork.
  • Operational Supervision & Internal Coordination:
    • Providing support and supervision to shift Sergeants and the Dispatch Center.
    • Ensuring communication and coordination among shifts are optimized to support campus service.
    • Reviewing police reports and ensuring corrections revisions or deletions are handled in a timely manner.
    • Providing interpretation regarding laws regulations and internal policies for staff.
  • Campus Safety & Law Enforcement Operations:
    • Performing the duties of uniformed officers including patrolling responding to calls and stepping in during shifts as needed.
    • Warning issuing summons or making arrests for violations of state laws local ordinances or college rules.
    • Ensuring all mandates are followed including criminal statutes traffic enforcement and accident investigations.
    • Collaborating with the Emergency Preparedness Manager and Clery Act/Title IX teams on campus compliance.
  • Community Engagement & External Relations:
    • Building relationships with local state and federal partners as well as community stakeholders.
    • Representing law enforcement on college-wide committees and task forces.
    • Maintaining positive relations with the college community and acting as a liaison to outside agencies.
    • Partnering on shared awareness initiatives and discussing public safety best practices.
